  • as winter approaches and the possibility of bigger waves become a reality whats the biggest you will go out?
looking at saturdays forecast, I know its not a day for me but curious what are your limitations?
I knew I would never be hard core. So I tried to be soft core. Instead, Iím just an apple core.

  • DOH but in freezing cold water DOH counts and triple to me. Extra rubber etc... kills it a little plus it often closes out when its super big.

  • summertime i dont have any doubts surfing well overhead waves. warm water max flexibility cuz no wetsuit. In the winter head high is very comfortable. Anything bigger then that will all the gear on and im gona head to a spot with no paddle.

  • it mostly depends on temperature and what kind of shape i'm in. The only day i can remember not going out was 3/11. i hadn't surfed--or really done any cardio--for three months and thought it might be a sketchy first day of the year.

so far the biggest i was out was 3/11 - but i didn't catch anything. just got thrown each time. and the only reason I made it out that day was cuz SC and MArio were both yelling "GO! GO!"

  • I'll paddle out in just about anything but that doesn't mean I'll surf it.

When I just started learning I paddled out from West Gilgo into this huge swell (don't remember the day but it was at least 200 yards out) I watched the waves for a while trying to find a good one. It had to be close to double overhead. I decided it was out of my league. By the time I got back in I was in Gilgo.
    Trust in the board.

  • Thurso, Scotland at easy 10 ft and square over a shallow granite slab .  Could've got out there w/dry hair but no fuckin way was I going to drop in on one of those things.  Tucked tail and went around the corner to a protected little beachie that was about head high.

  • also depends on the type of break, how well you know the break, the crowd, the bottom, tide, the wind and other variables. †i am comfortable up to about head high most of the time, and then start to get a little edgy as it gets overhead. †biggest i've been out in was probably last october in the holy farking brown trout swell, and i was crappin in my wetsuit most of the time.

if it is head and a half at a point break, medium to high tide, not to crowded (yeah right), warm water and i know the place, then i would probably be relatively comfortable. on the other hand, if it is a beach break and the swell is straight on, tide is low, long period swell, head high, sucking out, freezing water, crowded, dark, 20kt offshores, snowing, etc... i might be less comfortable....you get the picture :)

  • Anything up to head high most the time is no sweat for me, over head  starts to get sketchy but yeah as uptown said theres so many variables to it. hah last october i preitty much shat my pants and where i was and it was packed so that didnt make it any better. I have done overhead without rly eating it too much, but even thats can be scary. Cold water also makes a huge difference, plus adding 20 pounds with a 5/4 on can sometimes make even a chest high wave a hassle. Otherwise id say the biggest i would go out would prolly be double over-head max but theres so manny factors that can affect that. The thing that works for me is too keep the stoke up to balance with the fear. Once i catch a good wave the fear goes away until, i eat it again.

  • depends on how you define head high, overhead, double-o.

surfed head high in mexico and it was no sweat b/c the wave wasn't parti. hollow.  when it gets crazy offshores, dumpy and freezing at a beach break round these parts, it's pretty gnarly, but i'll do it if there's enough peer pressure.

the only thing that sux about surfing big waves around these parts, is that most of our waves are small crappers all year long.  so when you get that big, freak swell you're totally unprepared.  i remembered some consistent big swell last spring.  by the 3rd day or so, i was feeling pretty cozy in the lineup.

you mentioned this to me before and I have to agree with you. paddled out on a few bigger days latley and after sitting in the line up for a while boredom beat out fear and I just went for it....winter waves (cold water) are making me a bit nervous but I'll give it a go
