Longboard to short (er) board - advice please

  • Hi guys,

I'm looking to transition from my 9'2" longboard down towards learning shortboard technique.  I started out on a longboard about 2 years ago and I'm surfing year-round. Aside from getting pounded in heavier surf (even when I eskimo roll) I'd like to learn how to shortboard (and be able to duck-dive too!).  So, what size board/shape board shape would you recommend for this step? I'm 6'1" and about 170.

    thanks,

  • 6'2 or 6'4 Dumpster Diver.

    Solid suggestion.

Whatever you choose, fight the temptation to try to go too short too quick. Also think in terms of width as well - you'll be better suited with a board with more hips that will give you a bit more stability - remember, you're trying to transition from something that's likely pretty damned wide and stable - if you try going directly to something 18.5" wide it's going to feel like you're standing on a balance beam.

  • Given your weight and experience level, I would suggest something like a 6'4 egg or an oversized stubbie shape- like Channel Island's Average Joe or the Dumpster Diver (like CJ suggested) in something like a 5'10 up to a 6'2.

Lost also has the LayZBoy and the Couch Potato, which might serve you nicely as well.

  • Im surprised you guys are recommending a 5'10 or 6'2 for someone transitioning from a 9'2. I would think baby steps; just cruise craigslist or the FS ads on here for something in the 7' range. Get it CHEAP so you won't feel bad when you want to move down even smaller.

totally agree with the used / cheap thing. i think you just rip the bandaid off quickly - commit and get used to it. something like a dumpster diver, as CJ said, or even a modern fish outline is a great transition board and i think around the 6'0 area is probably right on and should have plenty of volume.

  • I'd recommend a big guy shortboard.  Basically an oversized shortboard.  Something with a shortboard template and dims in the range of:

    6'8" - 7-2"
    19.5" - 21"
    2.5" - 2.75"

This will roughly give you the feel of a shortboard, albeit much floatier and user friendly.  You could ride something shorter and more full templated (fish or egg type board), but personally I think the big shortboard is a better transitional option if your goal is to ride a 'real' hp shortboard, as it will get you thinking about how to work the board/wave in a manner similar to how you would on a hpsb.

Like Mayday said, something used and cheap is best because this board will have no place in your quiver once you progress beyond it.  After 6 mos. on this you will probably be ready for something more suited to your size.

I'm not an expert, just a dude who has learned to surf in his adult life and has been in the same spot as you are now.

  • Stoker V-Machine or an egg at 7'2ish.  Either one would probably stay in your quiver once you get better.
