Anyone cheat on pop-ups?

  • I have learned a lot from this board, most of it useless information about who's dating or married or traveling or drunk. But some about surfing. So now I want to know...is it ever acceptable to cheat on your pop-ups? Does anyone do it and how?

Aren't there times when you're too tired/drunk/old/weak/arthritic/stoned/pregnant/etc. to do a proper push and a pop (I don't mean missing a leg or something, but...)? Or you just screw it up but manage to salvage a ride anyway? Does anyone use their knees or their feet to push up instead of just their arms? Does this work?

I've even read on some surf sites that this is acceptable...at least if you can't get up (please no Viagra jokes) any other way. What do you think?

  • Yeah just so long as your doing it yourself. No cranes or hoists, that would be cheating.

  • i see a fair number of people, predominately longboarders, who pop up in stages. almost looks like they are climbing a stepladder. it seems inefficient to me, but they make their drops and get long rides, so whatever works. i should add that most of the people i'm thinking about are mid-40s or older; they certainly aren't old but it is possible that if you're not 22 anymore, knee problems, etc, may interfere with a smooth pop-up.

  • Maybe they ate to many mashed potatoes, sour Krout, suasgaes & cheesecake the night before. I think I would cheat on my pop ups too.

  • cheat if you really have to but it will cost you. On a longboard its not that bad because you are on so early but on other board the knee then feet slow you down. If you pop right up to your feet its a lot faster to find your position and go. When ever I but my knee down, I know i'm way to late and am about to eat Brown T.

  • Do not cheat.  Learn the right way and do it all the time.  It'll be best for you in the long run.  People who do the "stages" thing scare me to death, because there's that second or two where there not in controll and could hurt someone.
You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf.

  • okay, so input please on a related issue:
RD and i were going over pop-ups and i found out he pops up to his back foot and then steps forward onto his front. not slow, a quick step step. i just pop-up to both feet at once. he thought this means i have less choice of front foot placement. i thought his way seemed, well, awkward. i thought it was good that i just pushes and boom! both feet on the board.
    but he's got the experience.
    thoughts?
