Am I turtle Rolling properly? What about big waves?

  • I usually surf a fish, and I know how to duck dive just fine. The other day, a friend asked me to switch boards with him, because he wanted to try my fish. I have never been on a long board in waves so large, I needed to turtle roll. I quickly realized, even though I've been surfing for years (weekend warrior and only 2 seasons in the winter), I've never turtle rolled!

I know the theory of turtle rolling, but I don't know the practice.

    Here is what I think:
    • Roll over as the board is coming at you
    • grab the board in the middle
    • hold it close to your chest OR arms length? This one I don't know
    • As the wave is breaking over you, try your best to push the board ahead so you don't lose so much ground
    So I know the theory...but man I got beat up....any tips? I felt like a noob! (maybe I am!  :'( )

  • i'd get a little instruction. if you're referring to anything in recent days as "waves so large" and you got "pretty beat up", if you try it in any real swell, youre gonna get killed.

  • I'll bite,

I dont grab the board in the middle. I think the procedure is about controlling the nose of the board.

So, I flip the board over and grab the rails up towards the nose. Almost seems like the top of my head is even with the front. (Though any time I give any advise, I find that I actually do it way different in the water. But this seems like what I do.)

Hold onto the rails like your wrestling an alligator, and wrap your legs around the board, same alligator thing.

I don't worry about having any forward momentum or pushing the board around, just getting it and you under the wave and not letting it go.

Just before the wave hits, you roll the board over and grab it up towards the front and pull the nose tight into your body. If it all works out, you slide underneath and flip the board and start paddling.

The wave's strength will sometimes grab you and the board and flip you around right side up and aim you towards shore. My legs let go at this point and I'm just holding on with my hands. I could see this breaking a board someday, but don't worry about that. I still call these successful because I don't let go and me and the board are togethrt like old pals.

So there ya go. We did have that day or two of head high swell, but that was nothin!

  • alright if uncle will bite, i will add a tidbit of info.  You want to pull the board to your chest after your turtled your roll.  The more water between you and the board, the more likely you going to take a beating from the wave.  If the wave has size and you complete the move successfully numerous times and are not accustomed to the motion, you will ache for days and hate me for this advice, fyi.

Curious - now as a disclaimer, I've surfed longboards in bigger waves nearly zero times, so for god's sake, please don't take my advice on this - but the handful of times I've needed to turtle roll a board, if it was for approaching whitewater, I actually had a fair amount of success by separating allowing the much of the whitewater and power of the wave to literally pass between me and the board. Guess I've been doing it wrong.  ::)  But like I said - what do I know. Anytime it's more than shin high I'm on a shortboard.

  • I would say your successful in getting through the wave and not losing the board but you probably got pulled pretty far backwards in the process, by pulling the board closer I feel like I get more of the nose of the board underwater and penetrating the face or whitewash.

Like I said - I have no idea what I'm talking about, so I'll defer to the experts on this - just surprised that I honestly had no clue  I was doing anything wrong. But then again, the last time I turtle rolled a board was probably sometime back during the Clinton administration - and for that matter, the likelihood I'll need to anytime soon is pretty remote.
