It's almost New Year's so I guess it's time for the annual lookback - If you're curious, here's last year's results and discussion:

2007 Year in Review Poll

Like last year, I'm willing to bet that many on here will see themselves as improved - which I know is true, I saw you guys with my own eyes! I think I made some gains in some areas but am still a long way from where I want to be, that's for sure. A solid season of winter surf should help some, if we can just get past this little doldrum we're currently in...but in the meantime, it'll be interesting to see how you guys rated 2008 for yourselves....

(Note: You have to vote to see the results....so...VOTE!)

  • Took 3 steps back early in the year with injurys then 4 steps foward as I healed over the next 12 months, so net gain of 1 step foward.

Great year of surf for me though, more water time in July alone then the last 3 months combined.

  • at least 2 steps back and planted my feet squarely there.

....at least it'll make 2009 and easy year for improvement ;D

  • Feeling much improved. Living at the beach has the most to do with this. Buying a longboard so I can be on it in all sizes has a lot to do with this. Giving up skateboarding hardcore has something to do with this.

Eating, breathing, sleeping Surfing to the detriment of work has EVERYTHING to do with this!  ;D

Right on about living at the beach, I dont care how dedicated you are, if you live within walking distance of the ocean you will score wayyyyy more water time.

  • I made some major gains in the spring and summer, but I don't know what happened this past fall. Took a couple of steps backwards in other areas of my life, and it seemed to affect my surfing as well. Can't wait to get out of 2008, and make a fresh start.

  • I was doing pretty good up to the last six weeks. I can't image not surfing for six week will leave me at a good skill level.

  • you know, I think i'm getting wiser but most of the wisdom has been offset by my body falling apart. Aging is a real bummer, especially considering i'm good about getting to the gym and eating right and still find myself struggling with all sorts of pains that keep me from surfing my best, or at all. Bubba had a good point in the resolution thread about coming to terms with your ability. I think in that respect I need to become a little more well rounded person, 'cause when i'm hurt and have trouble surfing I get supper bummed out.

  • I have def improved a big part of that is being dedicated and riding the right boards at the right time most of the time. I feel like a very consistent not flashy but solid ny surfer for qhatever that is worth. Frontside I feel like I in a baseball anology I am a 300 hitter with a good on base percentage,  backside I bat 225

  • I've always been a John Starks surfer (streak shooter). My good days, I feel that I can hang in any lineup. My bad days, look out for Coronary Guy. Last year, the good days definitely outnumbered the bad days. The bad days were typically in NJ with bad winds & drift. The good days were at home when it was just me, JC and a few friends.

Standout sessions include Li'l Malibu w/ Frrok and the 5 or so weeks at a certain local E-swell spot with JC and friends. The best days we surfed with Jim Jim, Paul & their lady-friend and an epic day where it was good in the AM and just the two of us, but the PM session (with Blueberry) turned insane. There was also the day Looseness was supposed to join me, but didn't. I got a 7fter that went jetty to jetty and then the wind went bad and I joined the fray a the main peak where it wasn't nearly as good as my spot was earlier. WD got a photo, but the wave I got at the other spot was much bigger & better (fish story? maybe.) Another great one was the B*x session with Walter. Just two of us trading 5-6fters. That was a great surf.

Longboarding has become a necessary evil on small days. Would rather grovel than cross step, but there have been some days where the Cooperfish has been a godsend.
So heavy you can't even pick it up.

  • I felt like I was making progress all year and then nose-dived on the last few sessions I had.  I dialed in my logging skills quite a bit better, but the shorter stuff I'm all over the place on, which is a bummer as they're what I mostly ride now.  We'll see what the new year brings if we ever get any swell.
I'm looking for experiences, not happiness.

  • Coronary Man , I remember surfing with you , Jammy and Looseness over at that spot related to the pubis and I Jammy dropped that name on me . I remeber giving you a nice et wave in and yu rode it al the way in on your aviso and being really stoked .

Shortboarding and really short fish type boarding has really breathed a breath of fresh  air into my surfing . For wahile there in the early 2000's up until 05 I was logging a lot and only riding shortboard on the biggest swells this got real stagnant and boring . I have a pretty well rounded quiver now with the exception of a Log here in  NY that I might have to get back from Cota Rica

  • I can relate to what Oldie McDusty says - while it evened out for me a bit in '08 relative to '07, I'm still very inconsistent - some days are just much better for me than others. Not exactly sure what it is, but perhaps it's my own perceptions, expecations, and where I am on the learning curve...but I'm definitely looking forward to trying be a more consistent surfer in '09.
