  • yeah, someone brought this up in a seperate convo after the meeting - problem is getting insured for over a million. and what certification would it get & who would recognize it?

too many liabilities to concern ourselves with.

  • i hear y'all, but maybe sponsoring or organizing a cpr class might be a good idea for starters.  Then maybe some lifesaving classes or something?  Maybe just for our own betterment - y'know in case we ever have to help a buddy.

  • Here's a link to a CPR course with the Red Cross. It's for Adult, Children, and Infants.
    http://www.nyredcross.org/viewclass.php/prmCID/5/location/89/language/34/month/06/year/2007#legend

This one is for waterfront lifeguarding which includes CPR certification:

    1 word..... Australlia.

The liability issue is huge. The question becomes when do let people in the water and who do you let in. A skeleton crew of volunteers would have serious trouble with a multiple person rescue in some serious water. Thus its most likley that they would be there just to chase people away from the water and i cant tell you from experience that is not a job anyone is going to volunteer for.

  • OK PY, I'm up for it & I'm sure some others are as well.

    Get a cost breakdown based on 5, 10, 15 & 20 peeps

this will let us know how to wing it from there - also, maybe a time frame on how long this will take to get the cert.

(I've done this in Oz but i wouldn't mind finding out the yank way)

  • As long as its unoffiocial, its just for us. Just as a community, knowing this stuff & watching out for the people who cannot do it for themselves would be a very good thing. We'd kinda be like the Robin hoods of the Lifeguard depo. seriously Im down for training. I'll make out with a dumby.

  • CPR and waterfront first aid should be in any ocean enthusiast's quiver.  instead of wasting 2 minutes asking for a cell phone, a doctor or someone who knows cpr, you could just start cpr.

one idea that could make some progress minded individuals look good to the community would be to contact the Community Board (i could call Sandy in Addabbo's office) and schedule a signup at the next comm. board meeting for cpr/water safety/first aid courses.  this could be construed as surfer's working WITH the community to provide benefits that help all resident ocean enthusiasts.
