  • Am I crazy or how does a 3 mile Boardwalk just a little ways west cost $480 million when the long beach 2.2 mile Boardwalk cost $40 million. Is the last .8 miles made of gold?

When working in the 5 boros don't Forget, take your Estimate and Multiply by 10 ! ;D

Not sure if LB is making another wood boardwalk or you are talking of the newly re-built east end sections.   The Rockaway board-wallk looks pretty massive in comparison, and I believe it will be concrete. Hope they go through with those dunes.

Plus c'mon lets be real about this, do you see how Artisanal those life-gaurd stations are?

  • That is a ridiculous price for a few miles of boardwalk.  I guess when you include graft and intrenched interests it adds up.  It would be less irritating if they could finish the project in a reasonable amount of time but that is laughable.

  • "The new boardwalk will rival the best in the world when it comes to withstanding the effects of climate change"… yeah, sure it will, but that doesn't mean anything when the majority of the flooding actually comes from the bay. When living on a sandbar, a fact of life is sooner or later its gonna flood… its still a sandbar.

    Yep.

The City of Long Beach did not require study upon study to determine the what needed to be built.  The City of Long Beach did not decide to remove all of the support structure that had been holding up the boardwalk for 75 years.  The City of Long Beach did not decide to rebuild the boardwalk with new and  untested structures.  The City of Long Beach simply replaced their boardwalk.  The City of Long Beach had their boardwalk back in place on the first anniversary of Hurricane (NOT superstorm) Sandy.  New York City did not have a completed plan in place on the 2nd anniversary.

the above underlined is what worries me.  two years in, the concrete is spalling around the concessions & ramps in Rock.  the lifeguard shacks started falling apart the moment they went up.  Tons of the new material is rusting (railings, benches - and I don't think that's the intended look). I fear what it's all gonna look like 5 years in, and the expense & ongoing effort it's going to take to fix & maintain since they seem to have used marine-grade nothing.

  • Comparing a capital project in NYC versus a town in Nassau County or Monmouth County isn't fair. NYC is taking the second ave subway approach to the boardwalk. It's gonna be rad when it's done though.

Your worries are the same as mine, hence the reason that I listed it.  I have no doubt that concrete CAN last for an extended period, however the concrete has to be the correct mix and more importantly, it has to be maintained PROPERLY!!  I foresee snow/ice removal in the future being sped up by the methods used by the Parks Dept.  The lack of routine maintenance and repairs will be a significant problem as well.  As soon as budget comes into the question, the boardwalk will be forgotten.  How many times, in the past have we seen stairs simply closed or broken/loose deck planks just left, rather than being repaired in a timely manner.

I guess we will have to see what happens in 30, 40, 50 years.

  • With the extra money budgeted for the boardwalk, there should be plenty of resources and incentive to construct a reliable long term  maintenance program...right? ;)
