  • You should travel to a surf camp for a week where they get you in the water every day and even get you on your feet pretty quick.

    ^This.

Then come back here and try surfing regularly, taking into account our fickle conditions and infrequent "great" days, and decide if you still want to surf here.  You may find you don't.  Or, you may find that you have to.

    Good luck.

  • also consider that if you do travel to arverne for lessons that you are a visitor here as well.

if it proves difficult to pick up under your own power in our fickle conditions or if you prove to be an eager yet overweight middle ager, don't stress it. pony up for the private a lesson where a guy will literally walk you out through the lineup, turn you around and push you into a wave. hoorah!

  • New York has to be one of the worst places to learn surfing.  Fickle and crowded in the summer and fall.  Cold and fickle in the winter.

  • I just want to double down on what mayday said.  If you bring heaps of respect, take the time to learn proper surf etiquette, learn how not to be in other surfers' way, and DON'T ARGUE when someone tries to correct your mistakes. If you come with the right attitude you'll find the space to have some fun and learn. If you don't, it may turn into a very unfriendly place for you. I have a neighbor, very cool and friendly guy, who picked it up this summer. He keeps coming back from sessions complaining how people are yelling at him, even admitted he accidentally hit somebody with his board. He can't figure out why surfers seem like such angry people. DON'T BE THAT GUY.
