  • Actually, it's not just Long Beach, it's Point Lookout through Long Beach and all of Atlantic Beach, right up to the East Rockaway inlet.

    Short term, you have to worry that this will kill any wave action for a while. Long term, I actually remain stubbornly optimistic: If the groins are all rehabilitated and you pump a bunch of soft sand up onto the beach, a handful of storms later you have the possibility of some pretty good sandbars developing off of all of those new, solidified point breaks. Might take anywhere from months to a couple of years, but it's not like we have a choice.

    What do y'all think? Am I crazy for thinking there may be light at the end of this dredging tunnel?

  • A few years of worthless closeouts, followed by shape slowly coming back, but if there are plans to top off the sand every few years, it could be bad forever.

  • The sandbar that forms across Reynolds channel should be good

  • Least when the bay floods across the island we can rest assured it won't drain out into the ocean, whew, problem solved.

    Yup.  ::)

    One of the major (legitimate) complaints the people of the Long Beach are voicing is how it's possible to spend $177 on the ocean side and $0 on the bay side, when historically, the bay side has been FAR more prone to flooding.

  • Sell now. The culture is dead. This project put the nail in it. Leave this town to those that think it's way hip and those that cash in on that hipness. Kooks and sell outs, and a ton of uninformed residents. ACOE has green light to dredge whenever they want for the next 50 years!

  • The second you start talking about the Back Bay, the M's turn into B's as in Billions.  Keep in mind that the only solutions to the back bay are giant gates at each inlet, or a high wall along the bay.  To build a high bay wall, you need every single land owner on the bay side to sign away property rights to the government to build a high wall (likely blocking your view, or limiting access to the bay)...once you get everyone to do this, you can start finding the funding.  Then you need to start building large pumping stations to keep the rain from filling the now closed basin created by the wall, and then the City will need to maintain these in perpetuity.

    Protection along the beach is relatively inexpensive and easy.  Will it stop every problem? No, but it will prevent damage in the event of a high wave event.  Not every storm will be Sandy, so some protection is definitely worthwhile.

  • Long has yet to fix its ancient sewage system that since sandy is all but broken, yet give us 177 million and we will stick our dick in the mash potatoes and pretend like this band aid will stop you severed jugular from bleeding. The dunes or whatever will be lipstick on a pig.

  • Again people, water finds its way. No gate system, no 1000 foot wall will stop water. Get a clue, get a grip. Fight for what works. More money to RAISE homes, that's it. remember we live here for its beauty, wait till you see your new beach.  Your gonna love it, especially when you have to wear shoes to walk on it. Lol

    SO true. There needs to be more emphasis on SMART coastal construction.

  • Raise every house you can, the coast should be amphibious.  I think we all agree with that.

  • Dunes are temporary, don't they know that? Before winter came they bulldozed a line of sand like dunes in front of the boardwalk then the ocean took them away. I guess this is their best solution? If the waves leave due to the replenishment project so will the money that surfers spend in town. On a positive note, COSTCO is coming out with a line of SUPs made out of cheap foam like the wave storm surfboards. That should take up the slack!
