  • Thanks again BB! Definitely wish I could be there in person for this topic.

  • okay, so the meeting is still going on but they have moved on to other things now.

I feel its safe to say 85 to 90% of the people in the Rockaways both wealthy and poor, Black, white and other really want a 6 lane pool. Some of the people that spoke were very passionate and had great things to say.

Of the people that want whatever the Arverne by The Sea developers is offering, I felt that were speaking from fear of their own RE investment in ABTS.

The other 90% spoke out of a love and desire to make Rockaway a much better place.
I want to make Rock a better place, I'm willing to gamble a little.

    6 Lanes.

    6 Lanes.

To be honest with you, my thought is that 6 lanes it the absolute minimum that the penninsula needs.  If and when they build a six lane pool you will be shocked at how crowded it will be most of the time.

    Thanks for the updates.

  • BB did a great job speaking.  I stayed until a little after 10pm.  Too much redundancy and I have to attend a memorial service at Battery Park at 6AM tomorrow.

They were discussing the budget when I left.

I think they are going to recommend holding out for 6 lanes and plans to include an indoor gym in the future, but don't hold me to that.

For the record - one board member stated that since there was ONLY 20 speakers, it doesn't appear to be as much of a concern to the majority of the community.

I attend enough meetings and don't always want to, but the message is clear.  ATTENDANCE at these meetings sends the message that YES we are concerned about our community.

    Once again nice job BB!

  • Yeah 6 lanes is the minimum, but I have a feeling that it will be pretty empty at 6am from Dec through March. Nice work.

  • You are right it might be empty but maybe it won't be.

I wish I would have caught the womans name, she's on community board 14 and was the first board member to speak in favor of a larger pool. Anyway she seems to be a fairly serious triathlete, that often wakes up at 4:30am to go to a large pool in Brooklyn to train. But still even if it is empty Dec-March it will be full April-November which to me is a B+ for the R0ckaways.

The other person that resonated with me when he spoke was the swim coach for Broad Channel HS. The dude is an old timer in the very best of ways. He just came off as a guy that could coach a kid to not only be a better swimmer but to be a better person in life in general. He has had to deal with the limitations of a 4 lane pool for 30 years. He thinks a 6 lane pool is the bare minimum. I agree.

It would be really cool if you, Tex/shacky, Northstreet, Mario, BB, Sandshark, and anyone else who wants to, could get nice morning swim crew together in the Winter. I'm about to go City Wide with my Y membership since it doesn't cost much more so I would come out sometimes and join in. Instead of going back to bed if you get skunked, you could go swim laps! It's SO much fun!
It's no better to be safe than sorry....

Wishful thinking on my part. . . (the emptiness).

Sorry sir, but if you are doing a workout, baggies don't cut it.  Speedos or a drag suit.
