  • He sounds like the douchey "business hippy" at Princeton from Harold & Kumar part 2.

He's essentially renting the property from the city and strong arming others out through payments. Hmmmm.

I'm going to start taxing the ice cream guy, mailman and food delivery people for doing business on my property.

  • while perhaps interesting,  i'd say this thread may be a serious contender (with some substantial competition) for "most filled with innuendo, speculation and fantasy" much of it defamatory. there's certainly nothing here so far that helps the average reader know whether to take any of this seriously.

  • It's quality control.

Until two summers ago, your food/beverage options were extremely limited to frozen burgers, dogs and fries cast off by the NY DOE school lunch program and a Heineken tall boy or order a beach delivery from Elegante.

BTW: Lisa (formerly of Tap & Grill) was making fish tacos at American Deli last week, selling em for $3 ea, or 2 for $5.

  • Quality control? How about the moldy bread being served to our kids last weekend at Rippers?

talk to any vendor, pedaler, street truck, ice cream truck, fruit kabob truck...whatever. or try selling something yourself anywhere between, i dunno, lets say 80-110 along shorefront parkway.

maybe someone has stood up to him and refused to pay. please tell me if so. i am really confused as to why anyone would go along with it in the first place.

besides, it's not like the gothamist is gonna pick up this story. williamsburg will never know and the taco business won't suffer a bit. he's obviously not concerned about the Rockaway community and what we think so how is this defamatory?

  • This is what it sounds like to me, "Hey, you kids want to make money off tacos? pffft, good luck, why don't you manage the whole area for us because we're too lazy to do anything that would actually generate money other than find ways to increase taxes. Why go through all the trouble of regulating businesses ourselves?"

The taco tax comes on top of whatever standard fees, licenses and permits are associated with selling in any NYC Park.

  • I don't know Selig from a hole in the wall, but do know that not all people (hipsters included) are saints. If this taco tax stuff is true, it's like soft-extortion. A troll toll.

  • i have no idea what contract/permit/license the taco guy has, but i do know that trying to be a food vendor in NYC is a hypercomplicated endeavor, involving multiple city agencies. apparently its more difficult, restricted and complicated than in any city on the planet. the times recently ran a piece discussing some of this:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/12/magazine/the-food-truck-business-stinks.html?_r=0

without anything more than the vague accusations and allegations so far, its pretty hard to have an opinion as to how much said taco man is "shaking people down" vs facilitating the growth of a scene where there was nothing going on for so long before.

  • Devils advocate scenario..
(and no Im not taking sides)

I can pay the city all of its fees, and work out the hyper complicated regulations to sell food on the boardwalk.
This could take years, a lot of money, and in the end I might be turned down.

Or I pay him, and start making $$$ and having a presence on the boardwalk, now, this year with a lot less red tape.

Is it right? Is it ethical? No its business, restaurant business at that, and ethical and right almost never work.

Also, there has been a lot of talk from a lot of people for many years about "Im going to start a (fill in the blank)"
    Talk is talk, nothing happened.

    Price of progress? Maybe?
..Whore it to death then sell the corpse on Craigslist... (used to be Ebay but eff Ebay and Paypal)

i've always had a difficult time with people/businesses who so blatantly sleaze for every penny. it would be impossible to patronize only ethical businesses but this guy hits home, not just close to it. sure he attracts a crowd that may or my not be in rockaway without him, so who would these new vendors sell to? but so far locals have been the only ones supporting my business anyway.

i don't know much about this guy, that's why i brought it up. maybe he does contribute back to the community a lot. maybe he is acting within his legal contract with the city. i haven't heard this yet. all i've heard is from friends and members of the community who have to pay him a lot (which makes things even more expensive for residents) to sell within this area defined by Mr. Selig's whims.

please, prove me wrong. talk to ari. i dunno, please, really, tell me if i'm wrong. i can't wrap my head around this.

and again, all the government red tape is a separate issue. once you work through all that, you still have to lease street from this guy.

i came here to do just that. my original post was quite objective no? any subsequent sh1t slinging has been an answer to people's questions about my personal experience.
