well, i guess this is good practice for when the kids go to college...the money part anyway

If the anecdotal discussions amongst friends and neighbors are any indicator, my guess is that less than 10% of the people out there have heard from their insurance company, and of that less than 10%, less than 10% of those think they were treated fairly.  :-\

  • Long Beach  in between bay and beach.
basement, heating, tools, car = $35,000.

We have no complaints with FEMA or car insurance. We received financial assistance - enough to pay for new heating system and to replace some tools. It took 5 weeks until we could return home but we consider ourselves extremely lucky.
We chose to live in a flood zone in a house with a basement.

CAUTION: Contents under pressure. May cause irritation. Keep away from children. Do not expose to extreme heat or cold.
    Wash thoroughly after handling.

  • Welll....

I heard from the insurance company. Long story short - I'm being depreciated and deductibled to death. But I'm getting some money, and I'm finding it really hard to complain when so many other people have it so much worse. With the tremendous help of friends, neighbors and strangers, the filth of the storm is totally gone and my place is as clean and dry as it possibly can be, it's totally livable. And if I did nothing else, it would remain exactly that: totally livable. Do I wish that it (the insurance money) was enough to (in insurance terms) make me whole again? Do I want to make it "perfect" again? Of course. But if it can't happen for a while it'll be alright.

My hope for this holiday season is that we all feel whole again for 2013!

other than gieco for the cars, still havent seen a dime from insurance. i'm about 45K out of pocket at this point. house is dry, and clean from storm muck and mold but filthy from sawdust and spackle dust.

new beams and subfloor are in on the first floor. new electric is in. new boiler and hot water heater are in. new appliances for kitchen have been ordered. new washer and dryer have been delivered.

so much for college savings, IRA, this year

boy i hope that insurance pays something.

I was renting and on a higher floor so my costs have been low, 1k for a temporary sublet until I can find a new place.

  • Not that my losses are anywhere near so many others, but the early math is suggesting that my actual storm related costs will be in excess of double the amount I receive from insurance. And from speaking to others, I'm (sadly) actually doing quite well in comparison.  :-\
