  • So this year, we essentially had no garden, other than a bunch of dead trees, weeds and crabgrass.

    ...and some volunteer tomatoes.

A few days after the storm last november my kids were amusing themselves with some flood soaked tennis rackets they found in the garage, blasting our flood soaked tomato crop of that year all over the yard, and the destroyed cars, and the neighbors houses.

fast forward to this summer, and i have random cherry tomato plants all over the place. the tomatoes i had in my salad tonight were growing in a spot that i've never fertilized or really done anything with. in old crappy soil. never even watered them.

probably the sweetest, most flavorful tomato i ever ate.

we are all pawns of the gardening industrial complex.

  • the best looking tomato plant we have just volunteered out of nowhere in a little corner of the garden. the tomatoes aren't yet ripe, but it's the best looking tomato plant we've ever had. the intentional tomato plants, while tasty, kind of sucked.

  • i'm wondering if the tomatoes have to be ripe for the seeds to be viable, because if not, i know what i'm doing with all the unripe fruit at the end of this season.

    tennis anyone ?

  • also have a rogue tomato bush that's sprouted from about 1 inch of dirt/sand sandwiched between giant stone pavers.  it is overtaking a yard chair and has about 12 green tomatoes on it.  Meanwhile, the one I planted in a big barrel, the finest organic soil, is about 8" tall, and yielded about 3 tomatoes all summer.  I want to eat the fruit of the rogue ...but what's in that dirt post-Sandy ...something that grew supertomatoes...

  • You should check out The One Straw Revolution by Masanobu Fukuoka. Most of it's about growing rice, but his "do nothing" method of growing vegetables will ruin your gardening forever!

  • The tomato seedlings I grew in my apartment became stunted or died because one week I went away, I set them all in basins of water instead of asking someone to come to the apartment to water.
The tomatoes in my boxes were all ones that grew came from the compost... I didn't have the head start so I got tomatoes later in the season and still getting them, but I didn't have the chance to give tons away.
Next year, I'm not even bothering with seedlings! Going honey badger!
