  • Yea a lot is dead but I'm shocked at what is still alive and what is starting to come back strong.

    June Berries look great
    Japanese Maples all look good
Crabapple and Plum tree look great
    Hydrandrea are looking sparky
    Iris's are good
    Chives are sparky
Some vine off the trellis is jumping
    random onions are taking off
and last but not least I still have a ton of worms in my compost box!

The garden was under about 5 feet of water...

  • PTSD -- thank you for sharing - you don't know how good this sounds.  We're about to go nuts planting -- giant grasses (hopefully) as privacy screen -- maybe some big hollies in the yard -- going for year-round color & plants that offer habitat/winter food for the critters.  I want a plant cocoon to sit in this summer -- your garden has been huge inspiration.

  • wow - awesome!!!

we (and by we, i mean almost entirely onefin, but my hands are still bruised) have just finished ripping out the old privacy hedges. going to build raised planters along the fenceline and go plant crazy soon, too. not so happy about the $$$$ we'll have to spend, but will be so stoked to see it come together. also want to do lots of grasses for privacy. i really want some birches, too.

our climbing rose is going gangbusters, the mugo pines survived, and the tulips and daffodils are coming along, but we ripped pretty much everything else out.

  • we just bought a couple of the fernspray gold hinoki cypresses at home depot, plus some strawberries, ivy, and a few other herbs. i have them gathered on the patio, still in their pots until we have the garden ready for them and i just want to sit next to them and stare at them. i can't believe how wonderful it is to see some lush green - and lots of different greens and golds. i cannot wait to start putting things into the ground.

sounds so nice.  the day we visit nursery or other plant/garden spots will be a very very happy one (soon!).  every night I sit with laptop & look up native plants, privacy screens, groundcover...all about it!

  • I've been seeing random signs of life all over in surprising places.  It's really nice.  And I have no idea what they are, but there are some green, non-flowering bushes on the way to Breezy that have a beautiful sweet smell and I haven't been there since the storm, but I smelled them the other day with the west wind, and it was beautiful.  I guess I just assumed they were gone.

I've actually be thinking of thyme...can you imagine the scent as you step on it/crush it?  Actually saw 'button' online too.  Stoked on anything that stands up to foot traffic.
Snaggle: for grasses - I've been searching online for same kind of thing (will prob order online) - need something to line a fence that'll give some Fall / Winter interest & privacy screen.  My driveway is insanely narrow...so thin curtain of tall grasses might all I'm able to do for some privacy.  Since it'll take grasses awhile to establish, I'm thinking sunflower wall for summer.  Don't have the guts for bamboo, and not enough room for any sort of hedge.
