  • It seems pretty freekn early to be planting full tomato and pepper starters to me, but sure as brown trout Home Depot was stocked to the gills with them on Monday.  Am I wrong, is the weather really that warm?  Am I slacking, I was think thinking the earliest to start those in the ground was the end of the month if not mid may.  Thoughts.

  • I saw LS's link on the Cornell site. Started indoor seedings last weekend - about half are tomatoes. 16/20 have sprouted ;D They need to grow and then be taken outside to harden maybe a week. Then plant those and also direct seed others... would be happy for May 1, but at the rate I'm going, looks like mid-May.

  • for sure bullshit.
remember the horrible blight year we had four years ago?  that was home depot tomatoes.
you should never buy anything plant related from home depot.  it's all mass produced bullshit.  spend a few extra bucks and shop at a local garden center or even better a local farmer who does a plant sale (Evolutionary Organics does a great one at the greenmarket in grand army plaza (brooklyn) on saturday sometime soon.

as far as last frost dates:
that cornell calender looks a little ambitious... i say mid may transplanting outside is what you should be shooting for.  plant them earlier and you run the risk of frost, baby them a bit more and they will quickly catch up and surpass anything that you put out early.  tomatoes like hot days, but they also love warm nights.

lastly,  you coastal dwellers usually remain a good bit cooler then us uplanders when it comes to temperatures this time year.  i wouldn't worry about frost but don't expect much out of heat loving plants until the ocean temperature starts to creep up.  the upside of this is you all remain a good bit warmer during the coldest parts of the year and could get away with growing cool weather crops earlier, later, and probably year round.

  • I've got seedlings itching to get outside but I'm holding off.  Beans, lettuce, kale and hops are rockin' though.

  • Last year, I googled to a "Urban Garden Planting Calendar for the NYC Metropolitan Area" developed by Cornell. It's a nice 2-page calendar that tells you when to indoor seed, transplant, or direct seed. You can click it for a bigger page view.

  • I bought a bunch of tomato and pepper plants at Home Depot. I'll just keep them by my bay window until mid may. Good prices though.

Herbs, carrots and lettuce were planted this past weekend.
