  • The birds have been especially bad this year. I don't remember them being a factor the previous 2 years. In the past week, I lost half of my tomato plants, and the remaining look like they have been attacked as well >:( Chicken wire on the list now.

  • I've had luck w tin/aluminum pie plates tied nearby.  Or pinwheel staked in dirt by plants. Scares them off.  I also made a tinfoil 'owl' silhouette but probably overkill.

  • Few days ago I saw one squirrel eating a tomato not only that squirrels ruin lots of tomatoes every year- they will take a bite out of one, I don't like it very much. So I think I will have to keep my dogs out to chase them away.

    Just saw today the new garden group organized by a neighbor is selling organic soil by the bag as well as cubic yard (from LI Compost). The deadline for the order is early april, and the delivery date is the 14th, a tad early for my taste. But beggars can't be choosers...
