  • Hey guys, yes its me Jake... long time no post... life has been busy...

I paddled out this morning for the first time in a very long time... longer then id care to admit.... it didnt go as bad as i expected, but im battling a new challenge.  After an on the job back injury i suffered in January ive developed sciatic nerve pain starting in my left buttocks and radiating to my calf. The pain is the worst when lying prone to paddle and durring pop ups....
    Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks...

    P.s. getting old sucks...

  • Ah brown trout. Sorry to hear this. I battled sciatica for several years, still have occasional flare ups. Not sure there is a simple answer, but for me the big factors were sitting all day at work and then again at night in school, and being stressed out. Some things that helped were reading "healing back pain" doing a balanced exercise routine, without focusing on the sciatica, epidural shots, and trying to stay calm and enjoy surfing without letting the fear tense up my whole body. FWIW, I did get so the scans, and met with a neurologist, and yes they said I had ditched up discs, and wanted to perform surgery, but a lot of research suggests that outcomes after 6 months are pretty much the same with our without surgery. So I didn't get surgery, that was like 6- 7 years ago, and I've  been mostly ok since.

    Good luck.

  • I just walked a lot in the beginning, then started a very broad routine, but didn't focus on my back or do a million sciatica  stretches. I did varied core work. When I do a lot of squats my hamstrings and ass get tight and that can cause issues which sucks because it's good excercise, so I just do light weight.

  • You'll find the ones that aggravate it.. Never really want to tug on the nerve all that much.. It'll make the sucker angry.. Get a foam roller and a lacrosse ball to work on your periformis muscles

Yes, I always roll. In fact, i've found through rollering with a lacrosse ball how much tight muscles even higher in the back cause issues in my lower back.

  • I've dealt with sciatic for some years. Yoga, rolling and massage are excellent choices.

I'd also do a bit of research on posture. Recently, I realized I have "anterior pelvic tilt". It took me awhile to even understand what that was, and how to adjust my posture. When I did, I noticed less setbacks and that the yoga and rolling lasted longer / more effective.

Here's a link I quickly browsed that explains it:
    http://www.swolept.com/posts/fixing-anterior-pelvic-tilt-posture-tricks-to-make-your-butt-and-gut-smaller#.WU1UUxPytE5

Of course, maybe you're fine - it sounded like your injury was from more direct contact rather than indirect. Still a good concept to understand.

  • I wear intelliskin too.. Sik shirts.. Expensive.. The double ball works great on the upper back.. Put it in between your scapulas and out your arm through some range of motion.. Hurts so good
