  • Take it sloow. Biggest mistake most make is to try and go out to fast  Also mix in some walking with your running

Totally agree..don't push the running itself too hard - spend the time, take your time and worry about speed later.

  • just do it and don't stop, if it feels hard, if you are suffering you are right on course, keep going. Needless to say I recommend the whole barefoot thing but eff' if you got sneakers and you want to use them, do it. Also read this book Heft on Wheels by Mike Magnuson. It's about cycling but it's so much more about making a 180 degree turn and making a better life for yourself. Good book bro, worth the ride to a Barnes & Noble.

  • Get some good shoes.  Jack Rabbits in the city is a good way to go.  I hurt myself when I first started because I had the wrong shoes (needed more support).  Start small with maybe a mile and then work your way up slowly.  Using a heart monitor in the beginning is a good idea to.  At the very least, it won't allow you to bullshit yourself.
You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf.

  • I used the couch to 5K app on the iphone and I'm at 2.75 miles  in 8 weeks with no unusual pain.  When I tried it on my own before I ended up with a very painful knee that required PT for 3 months...inflamed patella

  • If you can, run on a variety of surfaces (dirt, asphalt, track, grass, sand, etc.) and it will help develop different muscles in your ankles and feet and can help prevent overuse injuries that come from running on one surface over and over.
The question isnít who is going to let me; itís who is going to stop me.
