Eating Healthy: What do you eat for breakfast?

  • In a world where we're increasingly told and bombarded with messages (see below) to avoid processed carbs and sugars, and avoid anything that is laced with preservatives, what do y'all eat for breakfast? I used to have a bagel, some cereal, maybe a muffin, occ bacon and eggs, some toast - but I'm finding it harder and harder to find anything to eat for breakfast that's filling enough to last me through the morning, yet abides by the "rules...

    Suggestions? What do y'all do?

  • during the work week, i am absolutely addicted to the whole wheat, egg, spinach and gouda sandwich from dishes. i also always grab a cup of grapefruit and a few other pieces of fruit. every once in a while i'll go somewhere else and get a whole wheat bagel with cream cheese and fresh grapefruit juice, or if i'm really tired, just a smoothie from one of the fruit carts with banana, strawberries, and pineapple.

weekends, i'm less likely to eat breakfast. but, if i have a big workout planned, i'll try to choke down some oatmeal. i feel like oatmeal is really good fuel for long paddles or when we get decent swell, or if i have a hard workout with a trainer planned for the gym. it gives me even energy for a while without upsetting my stomach.

i'm already looking forward to my egg sandwich tomorrow morning. it is seriously the highlight of my workday, as sad as that is.

  • For me every day:

4 eggs over easy (2 whites, 2 whole) with feta cheese & franks hot sauce
1 bowl of oatmeal mixed with muesli, ground flax seed & cinnamon
    1-2 cups black coffee

that will keep you regular and pretty full...

  • Im still going strong on my cholesterol lowering diet, although Ive eased the nazi like regs after the first month (like I had a bite of pork and some tortilla chips off my wifes plate at a mex joint last night). Gonna get the blood tested again in a few weeks at the 3 month mark.
Today- leftover salmon (wild sockeye costco- so good) in a whole wheat tortilla with spinich and a mango/blueberry skim milk smoothie,  and cup o' joe with skim milk.

  • I did lose weight, although I didnt feel overweight and that wasnt my ambition- didnt weigh myself but its at least 5-10lbs + according to my wife. The doc weighed me so Ill do it a gain on the same scale in a few weeks to compare. I think thats all due to going way more whole grains vs refined carbs. White rice/pasta/bread------------> brown rice (in moderation), whole wheat pasta, whole grain bread or tortillas.
I really dont feel like Ive been sacrificing, its just some simple substitutions that make sense and are pretty easy to do... whether it affects my numbers or not, I will stay on this, although I may relax a bit more-- The ideal thing for me would to be hardcore during the work week where I really need energy to get through my day and its not social eating anyway, and then within a reasonably healthy spectrum, eat whatever I want out socially.
I do feel, either via the higher nutritional content or the weight loss or both, more energy especially while surfing/paddling. I did a 12 miler sup a few sundays ago with no training and havent sup'd in months and felt totally fine. That has to say somthing :)

  • I usually have a Coconut water mixed with maca powder and vanilla flavored egg protein shake (Jay Robb brand).  That followed by water and green tea tides me over until lunch.  On the occasions where I need a formidable breakfast I do scrambled eggs and turkey bacon.

As for the carb and sugar rant in general-

I had to give up refined sugar and flour and most things high on the glycemic index because they made me really tired and they also tended to be foods i had trouble stopping after I started...  It turns out these food items were also making me rather heavy.  I've lost 50 lbs over the last three years since paying attention to the index...

  • Ever since having kids, I HAVE to have breakfast.  (I used to do the terrible thing of sometimes not eating at all til about 2pm in the afternoon which kills your metabolism and makes you ravenous later on in the evening.)
I will have either oatmeal with flax, plain greek or icelandic yogurt with walnuts and a little bit of honey or if I am really feeling decadent, hot sauce with a side of two eggs, spinach, tomatoes and cheese.

  • small glass of grapefruit juice, 1.5 - 2 cups strong black coffee, a bowl of some kind of grainy cereal that isn't too sweet {no sugar muesli, or granola of some sort...} with  unsweetened almond milk, soy milk, or organic plain {no sugar} low-fat yogurt, sometimes some nuts on top. I still seem to burn through food fast so if i workout or surf after breakfast/before work I end up having something at my desk to hold me over til' lunch like and apple with peanut butter on it. I do "graze" on fruit like apples or bananas and nuts between breakfast and lunch usually, even if my workout is after work.
It's no better to be safe than sorry....

  • If I'm still hungry, (I eat around 7am when I hit the office), around 10am, I'll munch on a banana with sunflower butter.  Very yummy, very filling.

  • Eat like a caveman!! Meat, veggies, a little fruit. Thats it. Its so simple! Wheat and gluten is robbing you of your nutrients and making you bloated.
