  • blew out two lumbar disks (l4/l5, l5/s1) two months ago. it was pretty bad. couldn't walk. wanted to avoid surgery so went with a epidural steroid injection that worked magic. now rehabbing and dreaming that i won't have to miss the whole winter.

i basically looking for tips on what people have done to get that back to a place where they could surf. training, therapies, etc.

  • This is not intended to be medical advice. My personal story is that one of my discs is pretty much gone at this point, anither compromised. Went through 2 really bad sciatica episodes, one lasting for almost a year. Went to a couple surgeons and they said I definitely needed surgery. Went to PT instead. Didn't really help. Finally went to a pain management doctor, he gave my a couple epidural injections, put me on a regimen of strong anti inflammatory drugs and I went to Santa Cruz alone, away from stress and surfed my brains out for 9 days. I came home 90% better. That was about 5 or 6 years ago, and have been mostly fine ever since, though get some moderate flare ups 1-2 times a year, but they usually only last a week or two.

  • Of course the irony is my back pain has flared up the last week. But I mostly just ignore it and keep moving at this point.

  • I suffered for years with back issues.  Yoga and core strengthening save my life.  Also, for the mental aspects of back pain I would explore Dr. Sarno's book.  I found a lot of truths there. Keep an open mind.

  • Oh yes. Sarno helped me a lot too. And I do workout regularly, a workout not focused on my back, or my core for that matter, but overall health.
