  • If you are looking to improve your breath control on severe hold downs here is a training manual that was passed along to me by a guy who lives on the North Shore and regularly surfs Sunset and Waimea. I probably won't be doing this but I figured someone here might see some value from it.

  • Hey, would you be able to post that again? It doesn't work. I'd be interested in seeing what the training is.

    Thanks

  • Look up APNEA breath holding. I use it mainly for diving, which crosses over to surfing obviously very well. Basically trains yourself to longer breath holds.

  • does it work when you're getting pummeled and ragdolled around or just when you're underwater in an unstressed situation?
2 different things in my mind. either way, any breath training should provide added confidence, which is in itself a big deal.

I think the main factor that translates over is conditioning yourself to keep heart rate down and calm to conserve the air in your blood stream.

  • my goal when i was not how long i could hold my breath, that is the easy part, it was how long could I hold an exhale that always seemed more important.  The wipeout, to rag doll, to two wave hold down, to inevitable situation where death seemed likely typically meant I was going to have to exhale and remain calm at some point. At my best, I could while resting exhale and hold for 90 seconds.  While surfing maybe 20 seconds.
