So I got called a "Tree-Hugger".

  • So I'm in town the other day, talking to this guy who runs a local gym about possibly becoming a member. As these conversations usually go, you talk about yourself a bit and what type of exercise you've done in the past and are currently up to, so of course I talk about how my main outlet is surfing. This of course spurs conversations of water temps, surfing year round, wetsuits, yadayada, all the usual. He smirked a little and we went on, finally coming to a conclusion for a membership package that works for me and my family.

After all the papers were signed, he looks at me and says that he'll get me an envelope. Somewhat absentmindedly and I guess instinctively, I told him to save the envelope, it would just end up in the trash. He looked back at at me and said, "What, you're a Tree-Hugger, too?"

We spoke for a few minutes about it and I talked about how I try to not take plastic bags when I don't need to, the incredible amount of plastic that ends up in the ocean and on our beaches, and how I have a hard time walking the beach because I'm constantly picking stuff up - I can't seem to bring myself to walk past it knowing it's going to end up in the water with us or worse, in our food chain.

He smirked and shook his head, I took my papers and left. I knew he really didnt get it at all, the surfing thing, the passing on the envelope thing. I also couldn't help but think that my concern for the health of the ocean is just one more positive effect that surfing has had on my life. And I definitely left hoping he'd understand one day.

I never really thought about it until he said it, but I guess he's right. I'm a tree hugger. And so with that, the NYNJSurf.com "Green Room" is born.

Enjoy the room, post up and inspire yourself and others to do things to help our planet survive us. And maybe hug a tree once in a while.

     ;D

  • I wind up telling people hugging trees is my major most of the time because if I say Environmental Sustainability I get the confused puppy look, guess I should just embrace being called a tree hugger (pun maybe intended haha).
    Peace,

  • I would've punched that dude in the nads and canceled membership if that guy called me  a "tree hugger"!

Not wanting an envelope or plastic bag and giving a crap about your family and the world we live in does not make you some nutjob worthy of a stinkeye head shaking.

You know, Allison, that's the funny thing. I honestly didnt get offended, I didnt for a moment feel that he meant it in a disrespectful way, I think he truly just didn't get it.

Perhaps I should have been annoyed, but perhaps one day the light bulb clicks on for him. I hope so.

  • this is why we need to make very simple, yet effective conservation habits mainstream. small actions in aggregate = big effects.

the thing that's even funnier is that it's really not that hard to start making reusable cloth bags mainstream enough to eliminate funny looks of any kind. much of california (at least the california i hang out in) works like this, and it's not just just the tree-huggers and liberals... it's everyone - because it's normal and it's just what everybody does.

when i lived in dublin a similiar thing happened. the country passed a bag tax... 5 cent per bag used at a shop or grocery. pretty soon it became normal for everyone to carry around a little bag with them in case they stopped somewhere.

it's a shame because it would be totally possible to do this at the level of state or local policy and the large majority of the population would likely just switch their habits to accomodate. it would mean a lot in terms of saved waste and usage.

  • the first I remember hearing the name "tree hugger' was in Germany.
It refered to Greenpeace hippy extremist that would chain themselves or hug themselves around trees to protect them from being cut down.

Later they learned about spike'ing..a much more dangerous (to the logger) method of Environmental action.

Tree Hugger, if LNG wins or someone else tries to eff with my backyard..yep let the hugging begin..

Yep - no explanations, just a flat, "It aint gonna happen."  :-\ :-\

It really SHOULD. People would adjust, and they'll adjust quickly.
