When it's macking and I'm riding my desk, I . . .

Try to ignore everything surf related and bury myself in work.
Bitch on the message board about how I am somehow responsible for the waves everyone else gets to enjoy.
Obsess over the swell all day. Checking the cams, reading the buoys, watching the forecast sites. IN A STOKED WAY
Obsess over the swell all day. Checking the cams, reading the buoys, watching the forecast sites. IN A MOOD THAT MAKES ME WISH WIPEOUTS AND BEAT DOWNS ON EVERY MICROSCOPIC HUMAN ON THE WEBCAM

  • To be quite honest, I have been watching the cams for a while now, silently praying that I get to watch a clean up set wash every last lucky bastard up onto the sand. Not again and again; but maybe just once. Otherwise, I hope people exhaust themselves and are pleased with their sessions.

  •  . . . which makes me think about mediated experiences. Because when I'm on the beach or the boardwalk, I absolutely root for (almost) everyone surfing. Somehow, having them reduced on the webcam, and being this far away from the surf, warps the camaraderie that I should feel and casts a sadistic pall over my entertainment.

  • stop looking at cams.  i did 4 years ago and it's done wonders for my TDR psyche.
You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf.

  • I score plently, but like everyone have to ride the desk to pay the bills. I stay away from the cams and keep hours that ensure i can always get some water time any day of the week.
