  • I'm surprised to not see more of it.   I don't know if it's this Indian Summer, or just being in the water after the absolute dirth of waves of late, but yesterday went south with my bro and mate and it was just ridiculously fun.  MUCH better than expected.  One of those days you hope to just get wet and all of it just works.  Conditions shifted a bit but was pretty much PERFECT the whole time. Water still in 3/2 range. 80 degrees outside. Offshore all day.  Waves didn't have much punch but some barrels.  Swell direction put me on the opposite side of the Jetty I'm used to down there so it was coming in both directions left off a jetty and right in the middle towards it just for variety!    Size wise, Waist to shoulder with plenty of head high sets pretty much NON STOP.   Surfed for a solid 4 hours with a small break to just literally collapse on the beach and quickly go to car for small refuel.    Pretty much went until we were winded beyond the ability to paddle. And then we caught a few more just to make sure.

The vibe in the water was so friendly I was looking for the Hallmark banner on the beach.  Point of stoke was the 60 year old guy I met out there on a 8 foot Desert Island thruster trading wave after wave with us.  Inspiration.

Board wise I tried out Mark E's new 7' 2" redwood single fin and couldn't get off it. Wow.  Good stuff.  Total revelation.  I'm such a stickler on my tri/quad shorties that I forget how good it is to mix it up.  Might be completely convinced the the mid range board like that is the way to for conditions like this in the future.  Pivots off the tail but paddles and sets rail like a  like a sleek longboard.  Total revelation and surfed so much better having to think about what's under my feet.

Anyway, I'm still surf stoked beyond belief so had to get out since my lady and dogs have heard enough.

  • Eat brown trout and die.  ;)

Love surfing a single in fun waves. One of my go to boards for conditions like that is a 6' round pin single. Glad someone got some.

  • amazing there was "some" to be had. not that i had more than 5 minutes outside in the daylight, but not a wave in sight where i live. thank god, because if it was going off at home, given the last few days i've had at work, i'd quit.

  • agreed. I skipped out on work yesterday to try to hit the incoming tide and it sucked pretty bad. couldn't believe how the swell has disappeared.

  • There was a sweet window  out west on Tuesday.  Waist high zippers with the occaisional set, was great until the wind came up.  Kyle caught the wave of the day for sure...

  • F'Occy, you are very kind. I'll take it. That being said you and TLS were hitting the coping pretty hard from jetty to shore.

  • Better than it's been . Found a few new spots to me that handled the swell angle down in NJ that were breaking small but top to bottom and bowly on the higher tide and Rampy and fun and workable at low . Clean as a whistle and sunny .

  • I really love the post. I haven't had as much time this past year to get out and surf as much as I like to. Part of my problem is the fact that I live at least 4 hours from the shore so it can be challenging to go as often as I would like. I started surfing a few years ago because it has always been something that has fascinated me. Maybe this year I will be able to get out more often than last. I do want to do a polar bear plunge this year though. Only a few more months to make that happen, but it's something else I have been wanting to do for a few years and just haven't taken the time to make it happen.
