  • A "sloppy" is a triple-decker sandwich of either ham, roast beef, corned beef, pastrami or turkey, with swiss cheese, cole slaw and russian.  Typically, its served on toasted rye.  The Cellar Cafe in Newark makes a terrific sloppy.

    Thanks.

But no thanks. ;)  That doesn't even remotely resemble a sloppy joe.

  • Call it whatever you want.  I call it delicious.

I never knew it as a NJ sloppy joe, just as a sloppy.

That makes me feel better, I would hate to think that the fine Jerseyites screwed up a great American sandwich.   ;D

  • I was never a big fan of the Sloppy Joe, or, as its known in the midwest, the loose meat sandwich.

  • I just did a Google search "NJ style sloppy joe" - it really is an Essex county thing - its like 3 delis in Newark/Millburn area that have it. Although Sallie T's does have that sandwich, they just call it a triple decker Rueben, though.

The sloppy joe at Town Hall Deli on South Orange Avenue in South Orange, NJ is fantastic.
