New Jersey Finally Gets Recognition

December 23, 2007
By JON COEN - CORRESPONDENT

I know that New Jersey can't always be at the center of the world's surfing stage, but I love it when we get a little worldly comparison.

Last Sunday, as the Billabong Pipeline Masters struggled to finish because of poor surf on the North Shore, the East Coast got hit with a whale of a swell. It was windy and short-lived, but it was definitely photogenic.

Surfline, everyone's favorite Web site for surfing news, ran a feature on the swell. It's about the only content on the site that doesn't have to do with the North Shore season in the past month.

There are several Jersey shots by Manasquan photographer Donald Cresitello that tell more than a thousand words. He captured Lavallette pro Sam Hammer and Margate's Zach Humphreys on a few beauties. I was thinking it before I ever read the caption on Sam's wave it looked a lot like Backdoor Pipeline. Ironically enough, Sam has scored some great shots there and Humphreys even had a shot at Backdoor that ran in Transworld Surf Magazine last year.

"It was super-big, disorganized, and really scary," said Pete Machotka of the Manahawkin section of Stafford, who made the trek north to surf Casino Pier in Seaside Heights.

For every two surfers who paddled out, there seemed to be one broken surfboard. While the Pipe contest moved to Off the Wall, our glorious swell faded away.

Winter is here in full force, and it seems that we are back in a favorable pattern for waves. Today's wind is blowing up a healthy swell. Although the breeze is supposed to shift offshore after dark, today should be a nice day for waves.

The holiday season never fails, and Christmas Eve is that much better if you can add some good-sized waves to your yuletide festivities. Christmas Day looks to have a rideable bump as well, if you're dying to try out that new board or winter suit. If your wish list this year consisted of boots and bindings, you're in good shape too. Though the natural snow has tapered off, it has still been cold enough for blowing snow in the mountains. And there looks to be some potential for waves later in the holiday week.
