W.A.V.E. Set Fin Box Replacement

  • This is my Cousin's board. It was in very reasonable condition except for the leaky W.A.V.E. Set fin box. The original fin was an old chalky polyurethane Yater fin that was super brittle. They will snap super easy and replacement fins are extremely expensive. We decided to fix it up. There were a number of small typical ding repairs to fix all over the board, but nothing out of the ordinary.

Hammer and chisel, bit by bit. Got down to the screw plates and found the mystery of the old fin box. They used Duck Tape as the backing for the screw plate! the only thing keeping the fin screws from penetrating thru to the foam and the stringer was Duck Tape!!

In these two photos, you can see where the fin screws have punched small holes right into the stringer. If the original owner had really surfed this board alot, the foam and stringer would have rotted away years ago.

The rest of the shots will speak for them selves. Questions and comments are always welcome..

If you look at the tail, you can see two brown spots, one about 6" up from the tail and the other about 12" up from the tail. These are where the two fin screws hit the foam and were starting to cause water damage.

I had the board done and it was sitting in the space, waiting for my cousin to come up, or me to go down towards him. I was rooting around for a tool one day and I dropped a bar clamp on the tail if the board... So I decided to put on a Leash loop while I did the ding repair.

A happy customer. I took the original gloss coat down to a wet sand finish with 600 grit. There was so much bits of ding repair besides the finbox replacement that it got to looking patchy. I suppose I could have buffed it out and brought up a shine, but the sanded look is nice, and I like the way it makes the board less sticky in the water. You can see the two brown spots from the fin screws a bit better in this shot.

  • Nice work! Funny that I paddled out on my version of the same board yesterday and we compared notes it in the line up.

How about the duct tape thing? You were right yesterday when you said they did a lot of acid around the time these boards were built.

  • Turned out nice..
I ran across a waveset that had duct tape all along the bottom and sides..At least it made removal easy.

  • Did you go all the way out to the rails with the hot coat around the box? Or did it just blend really well with the old hot coat?

  • I only did a smallish patch around the box. The one picture up there shows the oval I roughed up around the box area. I did alot of careful sanding...

I have not figured a way to blend colors NYCWO.. You should know this!!

  • OK with UNCLE's permission I am going to jump on his thread and post pictures of the fin mod I did to my G&S SS model. Just for the board geeks out there.

Here is the fin it came with. It's not the original as I came to find out.

It was solid fiberglass so I cut it off with a hack saw.

Once I got the fin off I found the much longer base of the original fin. It was made of rubber that was soft enough to stick a toothpick in, not sure how deep it goes into the board.

Anyway I decided to cover it with some cloth and then just glass my fin over it.
