I'm 180lbs 5'10. I was a little hesitant to go on the small side on this one but went ahead and went with a more performance oriented size. Glad I did, it's the perfect amount of foam and works great in 2-6ft surf, I haven't tried it in larger so can't really say. I usually go a little larger to get in sooner on bigger days.

I have grabbed many soft top/go straighter noses and pushed them out of the way yes.

If you in your late 20's or older you may not want to stay in a hostel.  Having your own bathroom and privacy is nice on a surf trip especially when waiting for tides or the wind to switch.. After about 28 years old I told myself I want a private room with A/C and bathroom.  You can get that (and more) for under 80 per night in centroamer.

Plenty of hostels with private rooms, I snore like a banshee so it's a necessity for me so I wake up without a black eye. The environment is usually more friendly I've found, staying at hotels can be pretty isolating.

Wherever you go, find a hostel and stay there. You're almost guaranteed to meet people. Costa Rica is an obvious location, cheap, easy to navigate and safe.
