Title: All Roards Lead From Rockaway, eventually
Post by: Jake on June 22, 2007, 09:36:09 AM
i think somehting needs to be done about the lack of roads through rockaway... Half of the main roads are now one lane with a safety zone. It takes me 40 min to leave rockaway some times and its awfull. And it is only going to get worse at the new construction fills in. i want to donkey punch lew simon for advocating this. what is everyones opinion?

For thoes who might not drive in rockaway the roads im talking about are Shore Front Parkway (obviously), Rockaway Freeway (which has become actually safer for drivers but not for the pedestrians who walk in the safety zone right next to traffic), and beach channel drive downtown.

Also the lack of parking can and will be a great problem with all the new residental building there doing.

You're just noticing this?  Where have you been for the past year?  I got one word for you........................ DOT.

I leave fairly early and I'm back early too so I don't get caught up in morning traffic. That Said, I love the New Shore Front parkway.

I think it's much better now then it has ever been. Also when I walk past that white bicycle on Shore Front, I like the one lane even more. And I know this is a DOT Park thing, but Eff all those white lines, break up that part of the road and make it a green space.

The freeway is ugly. But I use it everyday. I don't mind the one lane but the lights at night suck.

I'm kind of stoked Vicki is paying attention to these things and how they effect his community.

I just think that with the addition of 6 or8 or 10 or 12,000 new residents, coming to the penninsula, it was incredibly shortsighted and just plain stupid to turn every single east/west artery on the penninsula into a one lane road.  I have had to drive out to the 5 Towns or Long Beach areas a bit recently and what should be a 15 minute trip takes a half hour.  IF you are going to take away the lane, at the very least create additional parking.  Stupid stupid stupid.

As to more green spaces.  Yeah, that would be great but Fuck man, we live at the beach.  ;D

It has become such a pain to drive here.  It seems like there is absolutely no thought or oversight.  Its bad enough that the lights seem to be randonly placed and timed, and now half of the roads are shut down.  It makes it really difficult to leave the peninsula.  ::)

omg people leave the peninsula.

DaK I get you on the living at the beach thing, I forget that, yea that's a hell of a lot of open space by NYC standards.

Again, I know I miss much of the traffic because I'm on the road at 7ish but even when I come back late, other then the 116th St area, I fly back in.

Beach Channel is still 2 ways bridge to bridge. I mostly use that road.

Shaddup! DOT will hear you.  You know the site is being botted to death.  Maybe it isn't all Google and Yahoo. :P

I know what you mean.  I leave early AM and try to avoid the height of the afternoon rush.  But travelling east/west on the penninsula is a major PITA particularly on the weekends/holidays during the summer.  There is no need to call the Wahambulance or onefin the Drama Queen arbiter.  I just don't understand how the traffic patterns that are forced on us now help in any way.
