Title: Talking with jscottk about the SUP board.
Post by: Mark E on April 22, 2007, 12:57:14 PM
jscottk brought up the idea of making a stand up paddle board and I thought it might be fun to make it a group effort. I think there are a bunch of people here that would like to try the SUP thing but don't want to spend the money to buy the equipment only to find out it is not for them.

I thought I would bring it up for discussion here. This is what we talked about:

1). Pool our money and buy stuff (block of 2lb EPS, fiberglass cloth and epoxy).
2). I think jscottk said he would provide storage for the board and maybe space to shape it in.
3). We can all work on ideas for rocker and outline and I would make the templates.
4). I can provide the hotwire cutter.
5). We can ask Supreme if he wants to mow the foam.
6). We can all get involved in the glassing. (def a two man job and prolly others needed for moral support, it will be a monster).

Anyone in?

Here is the basic idea
We all chip in money for materials
We agree on a size, and a shape
I can store it and give a key to everyone.
And we drag it down to the beach on flat days and run over kooks..
Drop in on this baby.....

how much is a block of foam vs a blank from mike becker?  have you explored that option because he cuts his own 2.0 density blanks.

And 48" wide.  And wicked rockered.
Title: Re: Talking with jscottk about the SUP board.
Post by: Mark E on April 24, 2007, 09:32:30 AM
Ok I looked into the cost of foam and here is the thing. Most places have a minimum order of $250 and then it looks like $85 delivery. The piece of foam we would get for $250 would be 12" x 28" x 13', that is enough to make the board and I would be interested in buying a piece of the foam to make a board and there may even be enough left over for another board.

i guess the next thing to do is get a price from Mike Becker.

P.S. we are prolly looking at $100 in resin and $100 in cloth as well.

i honestly dont feel that 12 feet is long enough...   i would go almost 14...

also what fin configuration are we going to go with? ...  ive seen a few stand up paddle quads...

From what I've heard, once you pass the 10' mark, it becomes more an issue of width, not length.  12' should be fine for anyone if it's like 30" wide.
Title: Re: Talking with jscottk about the SUP board.
Post by: Waves be Good on April 24, 2007, 09:58:29 AM
wouldn't the SUP board be at least 10' long? How would there be enough foam left over for a second board?

The foam block is 12" thick.  Cut laterally, that would yield two blocks 6" thick.  The question then is, can the 6" thick block yield the desired rocker.  I don't know the answer to that question, but if Mark says it is so, then it is so.

aha. got it. even if the secondary block is reduced to 4" thick, you could still cut a pair of fish from it, presumably.

You guys should make a 10' x 28 x 4 1/2 but make it a giant double bumb quad fish. It would give the beast a little more maneuvarablility with the bumps. I don't know what everyone weighs but 4 1/2 inches seems pretty adequate.

From what I have read the Clark 12' 3" blank has good rocker for an SUP. Can't figure out how to get the image off the p.d.f so I can post it.
Title: Re: Talking with jscottk about the SUP board.
Post by: nycwipeout on April 24, 2007, 05:26:53 PM
Most of the tandem/SUP boards are in the 4.5" - 5" thick range, and with 13" thick blank you should get two boards out of it. There isn't much rocker you need, just the nose lift is important.

There is a GREAT article here by this old bloke who just started surfing after he retired....kinda goes to show that retirement isn't a dead end like some people tend to think....I just wished I was one of the lucky ones to retire early...this guy has a great life....

So far I think there are around seven people interested.

No Mark.   I understand you are British, so it is understandable to make this mistake.  Pitching is part of baseball.  Passing is in football.  I do fail to see, though what either have to do with mowing.   ;)

Oh! In England football is played exclusively with your feet and it is played on a pitch. A field is where grass is grown or cows are kept. 20yrs in the states and I still screw up.

It's great you guys are doing this and I'm psyched to see your progress.  Take lots of pics.  Be super-conscientious, though, if you are going to take it in the surf and make sure you know what you're doing first.  A SUP is no different than a surf yak, methinks.  I saw my first SUPer in NJ this past weekend at a jetty in LBNJ. Wrong place, wrong time. Its a typical Jersey set up with steep jackers breaking in a few feet of water. Homey paddled out right through the lines of the guys fishing off the jetty. One of the few times I agree with them when they're shouting at a surfer. Anyway, he caught a few from WAAAAAAY outside, then split. Everyone should get a set of warning and instructions when they buy (or in your case, build) one of those things. I really shudder to think about what its going to be like if they show up at my favorite RI longboard spots this summer. I just hope people who get them realize that discretion is mandatory. The guy who posts at Sway's as CarveNalu is very much aware of the potential for blowback and always makes a point about taking care and being considerate. Just FYI, is all.

From CarveNalu's site:

Title: Re: Talking with jscottk about the SUP board.
Post by: Waves be Good on July 11, 2007, 04:29:57 PM
Well, if Supreme is ready to mow and provide a workspace and if JScott has yards of glass and if Bubba and I are still reading new posts to this topic; we have a sufficient crew, right?

Step one is getting the foam. Nobody has it yet and it requires money, time and transportation--unless you can get it shipped to you, Joe (because of how you are shaping regularly anyways).

I'm sure the financial contribution from the four of us would cover the cost of getting the foam and then the momentum that this would've demonstrated will certainly pull back in the other original interested parties to cover subsequent costs. If not, screw it, we double our contributions and there is rarely a wait for the SUP. Agreed?

The days last forever, there are "1"'s all over the forecast and we have the talent, the space and the money.

So, Supreme, let us know if you can get the foam delivered and if you can't . . . anyone have a car? I'll ride shotgun, carry things, collect money, bring a respirator, whatever.

Let's go.

I'm ready and willing to do this.....it just seems that everyone's spirits have drowned a bit. Personally I'm excited. You can count on me for money and shaping.

I'm just catching up on some of this thread...but count me in for money, shaping and glassing.

I think as far as the shaping goes me Jscott and Mark have it covered. Mark is the top dog. He is the most familiar with eps having used it plenty in the past.
