Title: Opinions on local shapers
Post by: navara on May 02, 2016, 10:23:48 AM
Im throwing around the idea of getting a board from a local. I currently mostly ride a 9'6" hp longboard from natures shapes or an 8'6" single fin from freespirit and looking for something smaller like an egg or even a performance fun shape. Board preference aside, what are your thoughts/ experience with the any of local guys. I spoke with Mark from Faktion and am leaning toward him but how about Davey Sky, i like his coconut model. Anyone have experience with some of the guys from Rhode Island like Spirare? Any input is appreciated. Thanks,

I stepped down from longboards, to fishes, and then to this model from Natures Shapes.  Its perfect for me, paddles very well and gives me much more maneuverability on the face.

Mike gave me a 6'7" q82 with a round pin to try out. I hope to get it in the water soon.

I have boards from both Mike Becker (Natures Shapes) and Mark Petrocelli (Faktion). I would not hesitate to order a board from either one. Talk over what you like, how you surf, and spend a lot of time listening to them in the process of coming up with what your ultimate shape will be, and I have no doubt you'll be really happy.

I have gotten several boards from Mike at Nature Shapes and they never disappoint.

I always find it helpful to just go in there with a basic idea and work with him to come up what I want for a final design.

Nature Shapes boards look nice, never owned one though.

Had a fish from Faktion that I left in Australia. Such a fun little board, wish I kept it.

Thanks guys. I jave no doubt that both NS and Faktion are both great options. I have already had a semi long talk with Mark and really like his over easy model with some tweaks
I really want to know about the dudes i know much less about. Like Malwitz who has a post below. Davey Sky's vibe and charger models make me want to go with a more traditional short board shape but the coconut though....!

Just a thought on board shape, no matter who you go with. I'd keep some width/volume in nose. Too narrow and you may regret the loss of wave catching ability the fuller nose offers. My .02 (I don't know the boards you are referring to, so pardon if this is a given)

Malwitz boards look sweet, I reckon you can't go wrong there.

I picked up a malwitz 5 fin bonzer and love it.

Hes in jersey so it was more of an over email design, but definitely was able to bounce ideas off him and get the feedback i wanted.

I prefer Freespirit and then N.S. then Mark. Cant go wrong with either one. where did you get the Freespirit?

I got it used from the rack at Natures Shapes. Bought it for my wife but she likes my 9'6" better. (Insert dirty joke here). I like the free spirit better too. Turns better and caries speed better and paddles just as fast even though its a foot shorter, much thinner and has more rocker.

Ha, the over easy is an egg and i actually was speaking with mark about adding width in the nose/chest for that reason.

squeek. everyone in know with a phoenix loves them. they usually look weird, but the guy knows how to shape for our waters. buddy has a big $15 garage sale phoenix thruster with boxy rails, looks like it would surf like brown trout. one of the funnest boards i've ever surfed.

My buddy is good friends with him. I asked about getting something done and apparently he isn't shaping much for himself any more but will be doing work for Bunger.
