  • Gabriel Medina Rides A SurfBoard With A Built-In Screen

http://stabmag.com/news/gabriel-medina-rides-a-surfboard-with-a-built-in-screen/  (Worth the click-through just for the Nightrider reference)

A dark world of grey skies and mediocre waves, where Gabriel Medina, under the watchful eye of stepfather Charles, rides... a black surfboard that communicates. Samsung, proud sponsors of the World Surf League, just *blew minds* and released a video in which Gabs rides a board with a built-in LCD screen, allowing him to receive condition reports and real-time communication from land. Messages could include advice from a coach or spotter, or even encouragement from fans. Yes, you read everything here correctly.

Alternative messages may include: "Gabriel, adjust your stance," or "You didn't really need to claim that ride."

The Samsung Galaxy Surfboard, as it's been formally dubbed, loads a cell phone directly into its 'heart' through a port on the rail like an oversized sim card, connecting the rider to the digital world. Though we're pleased by the possibility of people being preoccupied with social banter over actually surfing and letting the better sets slip by for the taking, the implied sentiment that there's something wrong with the solitary nature of surfing is... just awful.

And really, the cellboard will just never have the attitude that another certain black, talking mode of transport once had:

  • Gabby would ride a donkey (not in a contest but in a free donkey surf) if his sponsors wanted him too.
    Then again, so would I
Can you imagine the $$ a sponsorship from Samsung is worth compared to Rainbow sandals?
..Whore it to death then sell the corpse on Craigslist... (used to be Ebay but eff Ebay and Paypal)

  • No doubt reading treacly cliches on his deck is going to give him that performance edge.
