  • Cough, cough.  Um, they did announce that he was fined but not suspended.  Didn't say how much the fine was....

    Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast

World Surf League Rules on Medina
    Thursday, March 19, 2015
The World Surf League has released its official ruling on the actions made by reigning World Champion Gabriel Medina (BRA) following his Round 3 loss at the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast to Glenn Hall (IRL).

Medina Draws Interference at Quik Pro
During Round 3 of the Quiksilver Pro, Medina incurred an interference penalty while Hall held priority.
The official statement is as follows:
The World Surf League (WSL) Rules and Disciplinary Committee has completed its investigation into the Medina/Hall incident from the Quiksilver Pro Gold MedinaHall.jpg
Efforts were made post-incident to clear the air between Medina (right) and Hall
Coast. Following conversations with both parties involved as well as reviewing broadcast footage, the Rules and Disciplinary Committee has determined that Medina was in violation of the athlete Code of Conduct and has been fined as a result. Medina's efforts following the incident to amend any public misperceptions about his and Hall's relationship have been noted and appreciated. We wish all competitors good fortune at the upcoming Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach.

Medina and Hall quickly made peace following the incident in the competitor's area. The Brazilian Champ also appeared on the WSL Dawn Patrol Show the following morning to address his on-camera conduct.

Medina appears on WSL Dawn Patrol during the Quiksilver Pro to clear the air.
Medina and Hall are already focusing energy on stop No. 2 of the Samsung Galaxy Championship Tour, the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach. Medina will face rookie Matt Banting (AUS) and a yet to be determined wildcard in Round 1, Heat 6. Hall will take on Joel Parkinson (AUS) and Quiksilver Pro Semifinalist Miguel Pupo (BRA) in Round 1, Heat 9.

Don't miss the action LIVE on the World Surf League homepage beginning April 1.

    Yeah - saw this yesterday.

Just my opinion, but I think the reigning World Champ got off VERY easy.

  • Glen Hall did a soccer flop.

hall embellished a little bit. he called attention to a situation to force a judgement. but for sure, medina put himself in a situation to be judged. and he was struck down with great vengeance and furious anger…or a carefully branded, precious, big bro, dawn patrol, group therapy share and a flaccid wsl pat to the butt

the flop is just another form of the claim. it is a lobby. as silly as your surfaday claim is, they are acceptable in professional surfing. the logic of the lobby works both ways.

lobbying in soccer has reached a ridiculous point, with the accelerator firmly to the floor in the last 15-20 years as that sport became flush. i figure as professional surfing succeeds in becoming its business model, there's a similar risk for more and more of this type of thing. more of bobby's tennis.

  • I couldn't be less interested in the new WSL; horrendous waves so far, terrible judging, the never-ending "brazilian storm" story line . . .

Sadly, you're right - completely underwhelming so far - bothers me a bunch because I really do enjoy seeing the best surfers on the best waves, and we've had desperately little of that to this point.

  • I judging has been awful... Boggy turns and turns on 2 ft waves are getting scores...  Both toledo and Medina have been benefiting big time... Waves suck too today

  • Waves were kinda buttery the two days prior to yesterdays onshores..  Looked fun.  WSL looks to be doing their best and spending a ton of money to put out a good product.  Unfortunately the viewership has been really bad.  Some people have expressed concern that the funding could be pulled before the end of the season if viewership numbers don't improve.

Not that YouTube is a viable monetization strategy for anyone but Google, but moving the WSL stream from YT to their own video player is definitely hurting them.  Their player sucks and you can't project it to a number of TV dongles like Chromecast.

  • But you can send to your Apple TV via the WSL app. BUT I miss it not being streamed on YouTube.
