  • only got to spend a couple of days on the UK coast, and missed the larger swell that apparently landed later that week, but scored some funs ones. we started our trip on friday, landing in heathrow and renting the equivalent of sardine tin with four wheels. doing nearly a hundred on the highway we sped over to stonehenge which was just a trip in itself. i was looking for the minature version of stonehenge but apparently thats kept elsewhere  ;)

that evening we arrived at twilight in a small town on the Devon coast called Morteho. Totally exhausted we crashed out. The next morning we awoke to find that we were in this unreal stone farm house in this speck of a coastal village. the town was really cool with a couple of pubs, churches, and houses and not much more. coastal paths led up and down the coast and we hoofed it down to the next town of Woolacombe where the owner of the inn we were staying at (Farm House Inn I believe - part of the National Historic Trust) also happened to own a surf/ocean kayak shop.

Now I didn't note that on the hike down from Morteho that I noticed that these perfect clean-railed lines were pouring into the points and beaches of the coast. IT WAS GOING OFF!!! As we truned the corner to Woolacombe I saw what looked like 100 ants in the water but I soon realized that everyone was surfing. Yay! Not one once of planning and we were staying right next to a perfect surf spot (well actually my wife planned it and I must say she is good at putting us close to surf spots for vacations, 2 for 2 in the past year).

Anyway, the innkeeper/surf shop owner without hesitation lent me his board to go surf on. I was like right on man and ran out to the waist to chest high perfect lines coming in and surfed for a couple of fun hours. as the tide dropped all sorts of peaks, reefs, and points exposed themselves up and down the coast. the potential for surf in this area is quite good, with wind protection and breaks of all angles.

The rest of the (short trip) was exploring the coast. The infamous Croyde lies a 20 minute drive down the coast and many other waves exist in the area - saunton and lynmouthe to name a few. The people were great and the beer was delicious. Would highly recommend a trip out that way if you're in that area. Hope to get back to explore some more.

The rest of the trip was spent back in London working, drinking and exploring. Typical British stuff. Good times. Will try to post some pics later on...
