  • I remember a long while back there was a thread about pool kooks, or in other words people who don't understand lane etiquette. Since the bean arrived I've been biding my time at the neighborhood pool which is a sad, sorry little three lane, 20 yard excuse of a wading pond, waiting for the little dude to get bigger and for my job (glorified seasonal work) to fall back on hiatus for the summer. I am T-minus five weeks and counting until the last day of classes and just itching to get back to my swim team! It just never felt right for me to spend too much time working out when he was a little squish, but things are falling into place in a way that feels good and I am so looking forward to racking up yardage! Even more than that I am looking forward to ditching the kook magnet that that the neighborhood pool seems to be and to swim again with real swimmers!

  • I need to find a new pool. I can't deal with the people at my gym's set up. If they're going to stand around for hours and talk, why don't they just go upstairs to the treadmills.

  • yeah, it was BAD for the first part of the year at the YMCA that I've been using for a while, what with resolution people and a membership drive they had, but it's back to normal swimmers/traffic level  now and all is good. I simply can't swim in a pool shorter than 25yds....drives me nuts. + as username and mims point out they are just kook magnets.
It's no better to be safe than sorry....

  • All of the reasons above are why I love Master's swimming. I totally miss organized workouts with lanes divided correctly according to speed, coordinated sets with each person realistically placing themselves in swimming order so that even with up to five or six swimmers the lane runs smoothly. The neighborhood pool is killing my stoke. I need to get out of there badly.

  • Username has it right, itís not the crowds, itís the clueless.    If people swam in lanes appropriate to their speed, if they learned to space themselves properly, and if they followed the poolís pattern (i.e., stay to right even when the lane is empty) 4 or even 5 to a 25 yrd lane isnít really that much of an issue.
Always try to swim in lanes with people who swim roughly your speed.    I donít care if you swam Division III 10 years ago, if everyone else in the fast lane is lapping you, you have no business being there.
Otherwise, if youíre much slower than the other person in the lane,  go directly behind him/her.  If youíre about the same speed, wait until heís at the far end of the lane then go.  If youíre faster than he is, wait until heís approaching you and then go.    Unless the pool rules say otherwise, always stay to the right.  Itís not complicated.
    wow, i'm grouchy...

  • Well I finally made it back to my Master's swim team.  :) It's been about a year of swimming for a half-hour at the most, one to two times a week (three if I'm lucky) and my first real 1.5 hr. workout was pretty good. I kept pace with my lane mates (though I used to lead the lane, and now follow at the end) and really only started to lose steam in the last half-hour. It was so awesome. I never want to go back to the other pool!
