  • The WSL is coming back to town. And they're bringing the loggers! I hope we get some decent waves, but already it's looking like a quiet start to the season. Prove me wrong, mother nature!

Will there be a trials contest beforehand? Any local log legends competing?

  • Makes sense to aim for that window. With the stats that the ASP/wSL have via Surfline, that is the peak window for waves. I suspect we will have some. It doesn’t take much to push a log.

  • All is true...but it's not a question of if, but what quality...already it's a late start to the season. On good years, our first storm pulse arrives by August 24th. And we're not seeing anything off Cape Verde at the moment, so long period is looking unlikely, but still possible. Extra warm waters and warm temps could mean a later start than usual. Just a northernly disturbance on the pond named Chantal as our only hope...channeling the spirit of the quickpro...my wish is the contest has to go on hold because it's too big...they saaaaaay I'm a dreamer....

  • Oh and the quikpro was sick. It was really special to see the pros duke it out in front of us.

And it was equally impressive to watch the locals going all out and taking greater risks 1 jetty over.

  • With that Saturday forecast, WSL might've struck gold twice in LB. Wonder if they'll try to squeeze most of it in on Saturday--finals on Sunday? Or a wild day on Friday, then finals on Saturday?

How many days does it take to run the Longboard contest? Two? Threeeeee?

my question too...depends on the waves and how many/how long the heats run for.  i think there are 4 man heats? anyone know? my crude math adds up to about 12-15hours of heats 2, maybe 3 days max

  • So it ended up that Dorian couldn't quite get us to the finals, but it was a helluva lot of fun working the event and watching these surfers in both good and diminishing conditions. We went for the lay day on Monday and finished Tuesday, finals day held up alright as the winds cooperated.

Rumor has it that it's a three year contract, and while it's not written in stone, they (the WSL) had a very positive experience and are looking to come back. Fingers crossed!

  •  Oh man, The heats were way too long. They should’ve trim them down to 15 or 20 minutes. It is New York after all…

  • An amazing Sunday on that comp. Met a good number of pros free-surfing on the line-up next beach over early morning. They were all very receptive, shared waves, and seem genuinely happy for a small greeting and chat - them surfing NY for the first time and how warm the water was. A shout to the kids who drove all the way from San Clemente, California.

Mid-morning, we walked over to the comp and saw Joel Tudor coming in. He was so casual: got a pic, autograph and a chat - a personal highlight. And that board switch after losing the heat to Kani.

At the end of the day, we sat on the beach watching about a dozen pros having fun in the water, sharing/splitting waves, hanging 10's, 5's cheaters, drop-knee turns. It was something and i hope everyone else was stoked on it.
