  • A lot of it would depend on which board I was holding, I guess..but I'd def chat him up a little more about surfing in general, to get a feel if he at least could talk a good game...

I suppose after talking a bit and establishing that he had a clue, I prob would have handed him the board...and held my breath the whole time.

  • that's just way too forward.......I would have said "no" as well.......you gotta lube someone up a bit before asking to use your board.......plus, next time your "out west" you won't be trying to bum some local's longboard for a ride...

I had a question for the "just ask jake" section

(please submit any ask jake questions via email or they will not be answered

  • Tell him to fly home and get his board.  I switch boards and/or let guys borrow my board often after we talk a while in the  water.  They never usually ask, I just offer and they jump on it, but its hard to tell without being there but it seems like that guy seemed a little too self involved.

  • LOL!!

Considering I know ya pretty well, I wouldnt have expected you to say anything different to him.  As for what seaCliff says, I agree. If they seemed cool & tool the time to chill & conversatate or "LUbe" as NS mentioned ;D It would all depend on what board I was holdin too. The TB, No one but my close friends are allowed to touch it.
the spoiler, if your an OK oustider, take it & have fun. ;D

  • i wouldn't have given him my board either! and i'm almost as nice as seacliff!
a-who knows if the guy can surf?
b-who knows if he is from cali, and if he is what if he's from medesto, and even if he is from venice beach then see point a.
c-that's just bad manners to ask to borrow a strangers board. what if he had asked for half of your meatball sub? i'd hope you say no to that too.
d-even if he can surf what if he drops in on BJ?

only in Big Wednesday can a total stranger steal a grom's board and call the kid squidlips.

  • Thats a good point to. In a mass of crowded beach  goers he could easly slip away unoticed & you'll end up trying to out bid some one for it on Ebay just to get it back.

I dont trust anyone I dont know out there. Ive been surfing there long enoughto know its not much different than the hoods I grew up in my whole life so dont let the new morning suburbanite baby joggers & new apartment buildings fool you. Theres always been theft there. I dont even let those 2 spanish dudes barrow my stuff & i know them. You know the guys, always askin cuz they dont have their own stuff.

  • i'd be glad to lend a board to a californian.  but not necessarily every californian
not if he was like 'your waves suck, and i rip, let me borrow your board so i can show you'
but if he was like 'always wanted to surf east coast.  anywhere i could get a board to use for a few rides?', i might even offer one up

i've been on the recieving side of board borrowing on trips to CA a few times, not from strangers, but still, from people i'd never met.  i'm hoping to be able to give some back.  that opportuity doesn't come around every day.
