While paddling around a jetty, something decided to give me a nice big bump on the bottom of my board, with enough force to somewhat knock me off. Never saw what hit me. What was it?

  • This time of year, there's all kinds of sea life in really close. Big Striper? Bluefish?? A bunch of bunker all at once??? Thresher shark???? Cow nosed Ray????? There're several potential culprits. How hard were you bumped?? If predatory fish push bait right up in the beach, Thresher Sharks can be right behind them, picking up the scraps. Their mouths are pretty small by comparison to other sharks, so they're not terribly concerning, but they can F you up if you get between one and his meal.

  • “Consider the subtleness of the sea; how its most dreaded creatures glide under water, unapparent for the most part, and treacherously hidden beneath the loveliest tints of azure..... Consider all this; and then turn to this green, gentle , and most docile earth; consider them both, the sea and the land; and do you not find a strange analogy to something in yourself?”

pretty hard knock. hard enough to send me to the beach for a few minutes to see if i accidentally hit a rock or something. no dings on the board, so i scanned the line-up for a few minutes and paddled back out a got a couple more.

i was riding a fish so i probably deserved it! definitely not my leash, though could have been jimmy hoffa ....
