  • That’s what I tell people who look at my sweatshirt and think I’m talking about Rockaway Beach Oregon or in the Bay Area. We arrived in Arcata a little over a week ago, and it is beautiful here. We’ve been riding our bikes and running on the beach and purging our bodies of road food. The day before  yesterday we went up to Crescent City to Noll surfboards, where Rhyn Noll (Greg’s Son) has been shaping boards for 20 years. After looking around in local shops that didn’t really have anything worth getting worked up about, we spoke with Randy at Noll’s shop. He  took a lot of time with us, as did Greg’s ex-wife, who designs all the graphics for the boards.  His boards were beautiful. Really nice shapes, double stringers on each board. Very light. The board calling to me was a 9’1 comp with a minimum of rocker, pretty thin and very light. I took it out yesterday at a beach called moonostone, and man was it fun. Before leaving, Jackie and I were both recruited to work the Longboard Classic, which takes place the first weekend in October. The aloha in that shop was real, and I’m glad that I bought from a talented shaper who is not only a part of the Noll family with all that entails, but also someone who supports the community, like Boarders does.

It’s funny to listen to people warn about the cold water here. While a suit is pretty much mandatory except for rare occasions, I was plenty comfortable in my 3/2. We’ll see how long that lasts.  I’ll give more updates and post some pics as we get more settled. We’re damn glad to be here, but we miss the Rockaway Crew. As soon as I get the printer hooked up I’ll download the Rocumentary photo. They are excellent.

    Aloha to you all.

    -Aaron

P.S.  as soon as I pull off a 60 second noseride, you’ll all be the first to know!

  • Ahhhh. Arcata. Humboldt County. Mmmm, the air smells so good there.

In the very first chapter of Moby Dick there is a Rockaway Beach reference.

  • Ha, Ventura Local and I just moved a couple of months ago to San Francisco -- and as I was studying some maps to get familiar with our new environs, I did a double take when I saw "Rockaway Beach" just a couple miles south of the city! So wacky!! There's actually a cove there that occasionally breaks pretty well. And yes, the water is COLD! Cold, because I know the water surrounding home in NY is creeping up to tropical temps - and it feels like November here. Nuts.

Anyway, arcatasurfer -- glad to have you join us on the left coast... I haven't pulled off a 60 second noseride yet either... but will be sure to let you all know when I do! ;)  Drop a PM sometime -- when Happy and RD are in town, perhaps you should make a trip and we can hit the Rock here?

        * Rockaway Beach, OR, Tillamook, US
        * Rockaway Beach, CA, San Mateo, US
        * Rockaway Beach, ID, Kootenai, US
        * Rockaway Beach, MD, Baltimore, US
        * Rockaway Beach, WA, Island, US
        * Rockaway Beach, WI, Calumet, US

  • Dude, the apt has been great, thanks for thinking of us. I'm up at 5am almost everyday just to walk down to the beach and be there. I've been surfing alot more. Again Thanks, Darla, the b!tch down stairs is in love with Jee Mee and me. We walk her and play with her and are slowly adding her to our family. She can really ham it up. Anyway i'm glad you guys are up and about, I hope the ride across was fun, I still have your checks. Oh and I'm getting ready to fix that board, just in time for hurraswell. okay man, keep us posted, tell jackie I said hello. Oh and catch a 60second nose ride for me because i'm maxing out at 2 second just before i fall.

  • what's up aaron!

good to hear from you bro.

Man, the pacific northwest has always had a special place in my heart. I'd love to spend some real time out there. who knows when that will be.

know that you're missed and you've always got a place to borrow lots of boards when you come back to the right coast!
