  • Spent more time than usual driving around checking spots and waiting for the tide. Bumped into lots of peeps I hadn't seen in a long time.

More than anything now that the swell has gone I miss the anticipation.

  • Sat was all time. We need more of that. I was severely under gunned and got my ass handed to me plenty. Caught a few fun ones and a few sphincter puckering ones. The latter with less command to say the least. Fat Occy's old step up sat in the car stupidly unused. Boy that would have solved a lot of issues.

Sunday was poo in comparison at sunrise. The funny thing is that if we hadn't been given the proceeding days of waves the lineup would have been packed.

  • Of course not. I left town for vacation in FL(gulf coast) just before it hit, and I come back tonight when it's over. You're welcome.

  • In nervous anticipation, I paddled out saturday AM at 5:55AM at the NSSS.  The tide was really high and I appeared to be the only one out.  It was lonely, but the sun rising over the water was fantastic.  I only caught about 4 waves and felt pretty outclassed after not really surfing for months and not taking any trip over the winter.  I proved that I could in-fact still surf and handle the paddle.  I even managed a couple of turns.

Second session in the PM.  The waves looked as good as they get.  I really wanted to surf like a superman.  Easy paddle out (almost dry hair-thanks to smart timing)....and then I sat like a bouy.  I was more tired that I expected thanks to lack of training, and a managed only a couple of waves before getting cleaned out inside.  I give my self a C-, but passed for managing two sessions and actually riding waves.

  • Surfed as good as I can on Thursday . Wind was much lighter and straight offshore when I paddled out only 4 guys and hitting the bar perfect . Fri wind harder than expected longer period and negative tide struggled a bit . Sat ideas just when it started getting really good had to leave and was I picked a lotta CLOSEOUTS and surfed pretty inconsistent .
Pretty all time swell though and despite wishing I hadn't left my good waves boards in Hawaii had a good time but would like a couple back . Having a stiff back and hamstrings didnt help need to get back to stretching .

  • As inconsistent as I was on Fri and sat got possibly 8 of the bee easiest to ride but for these parts waves . While the buoy height was up the longs period on Fri and sat made the waves thicker and faster . Thurs when I paddled out was like [email protected] 12 sec . Once period starts getting around 14-15 the waves get thicker and faster and really have to pick em . Def some guys getting great waves and taking off deep .
The ocean will teach all those listen . All things being equal I find that for me when the wind is a perfect direction and less than 15 my success rate is about 75-80% . I drastically drop to about 50/50 when over twenty knots and is not true offshore .
In surfing like other things your only as good as your last wave .

  • I saw some great rides...I would have needed a crutch board, like a 7'2" to really do well....and a month in the gym....

  • saturday was absolutely beautiful at certain spots. i really struggled to catch anything my first session - on the biggest regular board i own, no less. thanks to seacliff, i was able to get a lot more and have a lot more fun the second session on something with more volume. i am now a convert to the more volume camp.

Don't hate the player hate he game .two schools you g guys who rip who are quick and can make rag boards work in fast hollow beach breaks and smart guys who ride a little more volume whether length width thickness and rip .
I guess I'm neither . Still got some good ones that hardest part is te ones that got away and knowing it might be months before its big and perfect again

So its not just me.. thank God.
I surfed from 8-10 on Saturday, First surf since December, and first time in anything over 3 feet in about a year and a half.

I got my ass handed to me.  Blew about 6-8 takeoffs, totally kooked out on a few, really depressed.  Finally, I caught one wave (only one in the whole session...) and it made the entire day worth it.  Just one endless race track... awesome.

Also, first time out to Long beach since Sandy, so I spent some time just looking around and thinking about what that scene must have been like.  Really tough to wrap my head around for sure.

Everyone in the water was friendly and happy though.  Great to get back out there.
