  • Hello. I'm writing a story about an issue plaguing beachgoers and surfers: beach closings and the pollution that causes them. I'm wondering if anyone here has experienced an illness directly related to being in the water. If you could email me at [email protected], I would be eternally grateful! Thanks.

  • Hey there -

You should contact the local Surfrider Chapter - the chair of the NYC chapter has a lot of insight on this subject.

  • the water in rockaway and long beach (to a lesser extent) can be polluted at times...mostly after rains in the warmer summer months. althought the ocean beaches are rarely closed to to coliform levels exceeding state and federal standards they definitely have enough poop in them to cause you some ills.

personally i've been struck by several ear infections in the past couple of years. best solution for that is some of those ear plugs from your local pharmacy...or the alternative - tertiary stage wastewater treatement for the entire city with no CSO's ( at a cost of about 100 billion). working on the second option, the first is your best bet for now.

    can you here me now...good
