  • Right now, the fuel situation and access issues are keeping me from trying to get down and help like I want. I hope that during the week, supplies of gas open up and access to the area is eased. Then I can get over and do what I can without seeming like a 'too little, too late" approach. But with all that happened, help will probably needed for a while. My best friend lost everything at his place in Massapequa and I can't there, either, and it bothers me a lot. I was supposed to do a mercy run of Polish goodies and such to make them feel better, but that is off at the moment as well. As soon as I can gas up with some normalcy I can out there and then get to NSSS to do or bring what I can. Thinking about all you folks

  • I picked up food and other stuff from the Park Slope food co-op today, but got send to Staten Island.  Dear God.  Not good.  Tomorrow I am going to try to get more and come to Rock.  Anyone know a good drop off point for healthy food/diapers/toilet paper/paper towels/you name it?  (Actually some really weird things got sent out... I mean, dried chili mango snacks?  Really Park Slope?)  I've heard that lots of places have enough, and others have too little.

FWIW, I also picked up a 36-pack of Bud.  Just sayin'.

Should be out that way tomorrow around 1:30ish.

Thanks.  I brought a vanload of stuff there today.  This place was unknown to me before (other than in name) but what a great resource and what great people.  Thank you, if any of you are reading this.  Hope the beer helps.  I told the coordinators of donations at the food co-op in Park Slope to send people to you from now on.

And to the young guys who seemed to be from the surf shop to the north: Thanks for looking at me like I was crazy when I asked you to help unload stuff with me.  That was really, uh, awesome.  To the older guy from same:  Thanks for actually helping.

Lots of similarities between Staten Island and Rockaway in terms of damage and loss... my heart goes out to all of you and I hope you're ok.

  • Spent this afternoon at the RBSC helping to put together supplies for community members in need ... they have a nice system going.

If you are still interested in making donations, the following nonfood items are definitely high priority needs:

    -  Coats, hats, gloves, scarves (adult, children and infants)
    -  Socks (wool would be ideal since cotton does little in the cold/damp)
    -  Warm blankets/ sleeping bags
    -  Flathead shovels
    -  Crowbars will also be useful for anyone lending a hand to gut flooded homes

A nor'easter is in the forecast around midweek... so tomorrow and Tues are critical for distributing donations.

True, true.  But they're a leisure time snack.  Cashew milk?  Different story.

  • Just saw this on a friend's FB account.  Can't vouch for its authenticity, but worth a try if you need it.  If this isn't a real thing, let me know and I'll get rid of it.
