  • yeah cuz NY is never good the first half of september.  You got to do better with the negativity, lets hear more not in my backyard from people that dont live here. Or this will bring crowds, or environmental degradation, blah blah blah.  Stoked for Unsound, stoked for Long Beach, and stoked for NY surfing in general.  I hope bal gets a wild card, 1,000,000 prize purse.  I hope Bal goes all Brett Simpson ala US Open and just schools everyone in his own backyard.  S_T-O-K-E_D

  • I think it was brought up in the ASP discussions about this back when it was first rumored. We don't generally get 3 days of consistent contest quality surf to be able to run a contest of this type, even with the stacked heat format that they've been using. And in only a 10 day window it gets even harder. I think it's a VERY gutsy call on the ASP's part to commit to this event. I have no problem with them bringing it to LB and the boost in dollars in might bring to the town. I even suspect that they will keep charging for beach access from the spectators for just this event. But folks should be semi-realistic about the possibility that the ocean will not cooperate and there will be 10 days of 'expression sessions" and "tow-ats". A million dollar prize purse for an event that could possibly produce a winner who is the best groveler on tour isn't exactly a great image for the ASP or LB.

  • "Surfline.com, the world’s leading forecaster of wave and surf conditions, conducted an independent long term 15-year wave study for western Long Island, New York, summarizing that September 4-15 is one of the most consistent time periods for sizable surf in the region. In addition, independent local feedback supports these findings, with September typically averaging 3+ hurricane swells, typically with at least one 3-4 day swell. Surfline.com is the official forecaster for The Quiksilver Pro New York."

  • Having never lived in or near a big surf-contest town, I have no idea how this might benefit LB or NY. Can someone fill me in? Will it create jobs? How much money can NY/LB expect to take in from this? is there a permit payment that goes into the LB coffers to help fund opening up a couple more surfing beaches in the summer? What kind of crowd would this bring/how many more beach fees will be collected if they do charge after labor day?

Anything I'm not thinking of? A chance for local kids to become surf stars? More power to resist environmentally/surfing unfriendly coastal management (e.g., LNG terminals)?

Any negative consequences? I'm very interested in everyone's opinion. I would be interested in seeing what pros do in our mostly mediocre waves, but I imagine it would be tough to get a view.
