Tough call - but my guess is that it had to be called interference.

Medina Called for Interference in Round 3

The bigger question: How much will Medina be fined for his post heat F-bomb drop?

Yeah...that's what's making it so hard to call. My problem is this: If he slipped because he was so concerned with the possible collision, then it's still interference.

@the_Kook - what's the exact language of the interference rule?

  • Actions that constitute defensive pass interference include but are not limited to:

    (a) Contact by a defender who is not playing the ball and such contact restricts the receiver’s opportunity to make the catch.

    (b) Playing through the back of a receiver in an attempt to make a play on the ball.

    (c) Grabbing a receiver’s arm(s) in such a manner that restricts his opportunity to catch a pass.

    (d) Extending an arm across the body of a receiver thus restricting his ability to catch a pass, regardless of whether the defender is playing the ball.

    (e) Cutting off the path of a receiver by making contact with him without playing the ball.

    (f) Hooking a receiver in an attempt to get to the ball in such a manner that it causes the receiver’s body to turn prior to the ball arriving.

  • I wish Pete Mel had let him keep talking and see how far he was going to let his rant run.    Gabe was on a roll......he might have dug himself a deep hole as in bobby Martinez several years ago.    That would have been worth watching.

And, yes there was interference....dumbness or intent , I'm not sure......gabe does not strike me as genius level.    But maybe that the second lanquage thing also.    Maybe not?

  • That's the funny part about 2nd languages, the internal barometer is not as high as in ones native tongue when it comes to offense.

I thought that Gabriel was quite calm and collected. Bummer that Pete got cold feet. I don't think GM would have pulled a Martinez. He's got lots of plans, support and years ahead of him.

    I'm pretty sure Medina didn't make a play on the ball.  ;D ;) 8) 8) ::)

I agree - the tone and tenor of his voice wasn't threatening, and I can't see how even if Pete Mel had let him go on, that he was going to lose it ala Bobby M.

That said, few things in surfing have EVER been as entertaining as Bobby M.'s rant - might've been fun to see where he went if the interview had gone on for another minute or two...

  • Looked like a flop to me, and I'm not a big Gabby fan. Maybe there was some underwater contact, seems like Gabby would admit it, if there was had been, though.

    I hope there's better waves for Bell's.

Ps I think the little man who broke his back and scrapped back on the world softball league via injury card would absolutely pummel his junior Brazilian competitor given his situation. The guy has kids and a family and no sponsors thus every heat is a dollar in his pocket.  Gabby didn't need the wave, he could have sat out back and won the heat.  And it was post Joel's heat where he complained about a leash tangle and didn't get the nod thus the judges were quicker to point out the "interference"

  • Glen Hall had priority.

    Priority
The surfer with priority has the unconditional right of way to catch any wave they choose. Other surfers in the heat can paddle for, and catch, the same wave, but only if they do not hinder the scoring potential of a surfer with priority. A surfer loses priority once they catch a wave and/or a surfer paddles for but misses a wave. If two or more surfers catch a wave, the first surfer to make it to the take-off zone will get priority.

I would have certainly called an interference if I was a scoring judge.  Glen Hall's right was unconditional and Medina had no right to be where he was.

World Surf League Rules on Medina
    Thursday, March 19, 2015
The World Surf League has released its official ruling on the actions made by reigning World Champion Gabriel Medina (BRA) following his Round 3 loss at the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast to Glenn Hall (IRL).

Medina Draws Interference at Quik Pro
During Round 3 of the Quiksilver Pro, Medina incurred an interference penalty while Hall held priority.
The official statement is as follows:
The World Surf League (WSL) Rules and Disciplinary Committee has completed its investigation into the Medina/Hall incident from the Quiksilver Pro Gold MedinaHall.jpg
Efforts were made post-incident to clear the air between Medina (right) and Hall
Coast. Following conversations with both parties involved as well as reviewing broadcast footage, the Rules and Disciplinary Committee has determined that Medina was in violation of the athlete Code of Conduct and has been fined as a result. Medina's efforts following the incident to amend any public misperceptions about his and Hall's relationship have been noted and appreciated. We wish all competitors good fortune at the upcoming Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach.

Medina and Hall quickly made peace following the incident in the competitor's area. The Brazilian Champ also appeared on the WSL Dawn Patrol Show the following morning to address his on-camera conduct.

Medina appears on WSL Dawn Patrol during the Quiksilver Pro to clear the air.
Medina and Hall are already focusing energy on stop No. 2 of the Samsung Galaxy Championship Tour, the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach. Medina will face rookie Matt Banting (AUS) and a yet to be determined wildcard in Round 1, Heat 6. Hall will take on Joel Parkinson (AUS) and Quiksilver Pro Semifinalist Miguel Pupo (BRA) in Round 1, Heat 9.

Don't miss the action LIVE on the World Surf League homepage beginning April 1.
