  • hey everyone! i was selected to compete in a business competition for school and i was wondering if anyone has any statistics of the increase in popularity of surfing in the winter / cold water? i already emailed surfline and a few local shops and i am awaiting a response but i figured i would see if anyone else had any insight! thanks!

  • How would you even quantify that, besides looking to sales trends in winter gear (54 suits, 5ml+ gloves and boots).

  • Easy! Hit up social media (insta in particular) and search the tags.  Everyone posts photos of their winter sesh on inta.. its da coolest!

  • The eye test tells me that there's clearly been an increase in the popularity of winter surfing in the northeast, since I first started in the mid-90s. Quantifying that in a way that you'll receive credit for in your assignment is a different story. I think you're on the right track with asking shops for data, but maybe take it a step further and contact some wetsuit manufacturers to see if they can pull some 10 year sales data on winter wetsuits.   • There's also the correlation between advances in gear and winter surf. Surfing has always been popular, just used to be a lot more uncomfortable to surf in winter. The new suits keep you toasty and are easier to paddle in. I don't surf as much in the winter because my winter suit is shot and can't afford a new one right now. I used to surf in the mid 90s in RI in the winter, suits sucked so bad that 45 minutes was a long session.
