Hooded suit question

  • Ran a O'Neill Mutant this past winter. Moved up in February and didn't want to go crazy on suits so went for the Mutant since I got it for a steal. It  has actually been a great suit. Very pleased with it. Very warm and stretchy.  Only complaint is that I can't hear a damn thing in water with the hood. This normal with most hooded suits? Thinking of upgrading to top of the line suit this winter.

  • Yea little deaf especially when you start wearing earplugs too all winter, surf ears are nice they let some sound in. But not uncommon to feel a little claustrophobic in the hoodie the first couple times.

  • Between the cold, shitty waves, claustrophobia in a hood, is it even worth surfing in the winter?

Absolutely. Waves are better than they are right now, a good suit is pretty warm, crowds are of almost no concern, and what else would you be doing on a crappy winter day?

Downside is the flexibility of a winter suit. Night and day from say a 3/2 or 4/3.

  • Agreed sessions more often cut short by the resistance band effect then the actual cold.

  • I don't don't find it too much of an issue. It's the water that can't go anywhere that makes you feel deaf. A quick pluck on the side of the hood with a head shake and the water escapes the ear canal. Hearing restored... ish.

But you've missed out on the main reason for leaving it there... "Oh, sorry, I didn't hear you calling me off when I blatantly dropped in on your best wave of the day"

  • I think people should be wearing ear plugs in the winter so the hood is a non-issue for me.
