My goal is to get everyone out Saturday morning to my folks in Malverne.  Than I will come back and do a last run through the house and make sure I have done what I can and head back there by saturday afternoon.  Having gone through this in NC I am a bit hypersensitive to the situation, maybe a little overboard.  But with the earthquake, the wettest August on record and Irene at the doorstep, I just get the sense shlts going down.  They already have taken down the contest site, wow, that was really fast.  My dad said we should bring the dogs there and stick it out until we cant, than we could just SUP to their house, the ultimate down winder.

yes, absolutely. anyone on a barrier island or in any kind of cat 1 surge area should consider it and consider it early. i think it would be irresponsible to wait until the last minute. there will be traffic, there will be areas that are difficult to pass, etc. anyone in LB should have a back-up plan. I think the same goes for Rock. someone else mentioned - be very careful about coming back, too. electrocution is a risk.

by the way, the animals are already starting to act weird. not only our dogs, but the birds were hudling last night and are GONE today in the bay. not a sign of life in the bay this morning, and i've never seen it like that so far this summer. no crabs, no fish, no birds, NOTHING. weird.

  • Now that is seriously creepy.

I think BltByKrmn was the one who posted that he was going to leave his wife in LB over the weekend without a car. I try to stick to my own business as much as possible, but I really think that's a bad idea...

  • Going to keep watching the track but we are ready to leave here in LBI. Hopefully realtors are calling all potential renters expected to begin this Saturday and are telling them to stay home until at least Monday. The last thing we need are 1000's of clueless people from inland clogging the bridge and island only to become the biggest liabilities when storm actually hits.

My parents are really happy they bought a house thats raised a full story off the ground now.

    Peace,
    Kyle

  • Hog Island was a set of two islands off Long Island, New York. One, shown on the map at right, is the present day Barnum Island, part of Island Park, New York. The other was a mile-long (1600 m) barrier island that reportedly existed to the south of Rockaway Beach before being destroyed by the 1893 New York hurricane.

DevelopmentThe Island Park "Hog Island" was used by the Native Americans to raise pigs, once they had been introduced by Europeans and left to run feral. It later became a small farming area. Reports suggest that it began to emerge from the ocean only during the Civil War period.[1] In 1874 Sarah Ann Baldwin Barnum (the wife of Peter Crosby Barnum, a clothier, not P.T. Barnum of circus fame) outwitted a syndicate and purchased Barnum Island for use as an alms house. She had, just days before a deadline, crossed to the island and purchased the existing farm for $13,360 of her own money, and re-sold it to the county (then Queens County, of which at the time the present-day Nassau County was a part) for the same amount. This island still exists today as part of both the Village of Island Park and the Town of Hempstead.[2] The island is believed to have hosted a number of seafront resorts.[1][edit]Destruction
    Main article:
1893 New York hurricaneOn the night of August 23, 1893, a devastating Category 2 hurricane made landfall. By the following morning, August 24, Hog Island had mostly disappeared. New York City's leading hurricane historian, Nicholas Coch, a professor of coastal geology at Queens College, believes that this has been the only reported incidence of the removal of an entire island by a hurricane.[3]
    During the same hurricane,
Coney Island reported 30 foot (9 m) waves which came as far as 200 yards (180 m) inland, destroying the elevated railroad. The East River rose above the sea wall in the Astoria district. Many residents in City of Brooklyn reported waist-high water in the streets.[citation needed]
Some resettlement occurred, but Hog Island is believed to have submerged entirely in 1902.

  • Track is still VERY UNCERTAIN. Everyone(media) is acting like they know for sure it's going to even make landfall. Anything could happen. These storms are unpredictable. By tommorow morning, we will have a better handle on where she is going.
