  • NY1 is reporting:

An 11-block portion of Rockaway Beach will be closed this summer due to erosion and for maintenance of a protective dune — cutting off visitors from a chunk of the beach just before it was to open for the season on Memorial Day weekend.
The city parks department announced Monday that the area between Beach 91st St. and Beach 102nd St. will be closed during the summer season. Officials said the dune, which was built after Hurricane Sandy, is in that portion of the beach. Beach season runs from Memorial Day weekend until Labor Day, after which point city beaches will be closed to the public again.

  • Yikes.

Going to be VERY interesting to see if the greenies or guards try and keep surfers out of the water there.

  • "About 4.5 miles of the beach will stay open, along with the boardwalk and the surfing area from Beach 88th St. to Beach 91st St."

I read this as the surfing area being extended to Beach 102. Sucks to have the beach at the end of my street closed.
So heavy you can't even pick it up.

  • I would suspect then, that you can walk in to the surfing area, but not plonk down blankets and such. You would have to blanket up in front of the box

I hope you're right. Honestly, I remain nervous that somebody will try to enforce "closed" strictly.

  • Well, they wanted the Death Spikes gone... and they got it. Death spikes were holding the sand in that exact area. So, no more “kook kontrol” and now, no more beach.
