  • Was skating a lot when Owl's Head opened and was off on paternity leave with my son. Kept hurting myself (bruises, cuts, etc) and pre-midlife crisis my wife said, hey, you should try surfing.

Bought my first board, a Pavel fun gun from Money for Coffee Mike. Been board whoring since.

Gotten better and usually have my high moments of competence when there aren't a lot of people around so I'm apologizing for the past as well as the future now. Sorry to hurt your eyes.

    Hahahahahahaha

  • tried it when i was 27, long after i learned to skate @ 8, and snowboard @ 21 (after playing college baseball at the D1 level), purchased my first board when i did a share house on the beach in bayhead, nj in 1996 when i was 29.  never forget it, memorial day weekend summer of '96, looking out from the deck at the jetty watching people ride waves.  at that point, was completely stoked on skating and snowboarding, and golf and mtn biking, just never really had an opportunity to surf.  went to Brave New World and bought a board that day.  completely and utterly clueless...as was the kid who sold me a 7'4 WRV funshape.   taught myself with that and a borrowed 6.0 thruster...if i knew then what i know now....lol.  3 challenging and fun summers and some hurricane swells later, i started renting houses on eastern LI, boards got bigger, i got better, still constantly tweaking and improving...more stoked each paddle out.  i rarely golf or mtn bike anymore and i skate and snowboard more than ever...all while working and having a family.  basically, every weekend, year round, i'm standing sideways on a board...waves, snow or concrete...love it!

  • Got my first boogie at age 12 and right away knew i wanted to surf.  Didn't get a surfboard till i was 13-14ish, 6'2 knockoff from tom sena.  took the whole summer to finally ride a wave down the line.  What a feeling.  I got out of the water and high-fived my friends..

  • The best thing about this thread is the fact that Bacon was making fun of hipster surfboards...my how things have changed.  ;)
I always was around the water and beach, but I didn't start surfing until we moved close to the beach in Florida when I was in 9th grade.  I needed to save up money from summer until xmas to get my first used board which was a 6' "Atlantis" from Sunrise Surf Shop in Jax Beach.  In retrospect, I sure could have used a bigger board to learn on.  With something like 5 surf shops within bike distance, I spent lots of time looking at awesome new boards I couldn't afford.  I loved those days of riding down to the beach on the beach cruiser, holding the surfboard with one hand, and surfing whatever conditions I found when I got there.

I see a lot of people who should . From the amount of millennials into " futbol" coupled with the way they paddle and swim I'd say soccer should be next trendy past time

I'm genuinely curious as to what this means as I don't get it.

It means I see tons of people who are nothing more than window shoppers , in the way and generally not even close to remotely ever going to be able to surf half way competent . Not every one needs to blow tail boost airs or be a Lopez like zen Barrell master . But there  just appears to be a whole lot of people who have zero ocean knowledge , stamina , ability , athleticism that's requisite to compete for the fleeting amount of waves we have . Pub sports , darts , fooze ball and billiards are much better suited to the millennial never swam , ran or jumped Nintendo TV BABY

  • Bacon gave me a lot of brown trout when I brought my Schroff to rbnyc. Now the shaper of every board he rides owes Peter a dollar.
