2013 is just about in the books, and it's time for our annual roundup!

Personally, I think I have a better understanding of what I'm supposed to be doing - I just don't execute it all too consistently. Still, I'd like to think I'm just a little improved from a year ago. Then again a year ago right now, I wasn't thinking much about surfing, the endless cleanup from Sandy was still underway - so I'll take it.

So how did you all make out?

  • At 44, age is beginning to catch up with me.  Shoulder injury in June that is still nagging, a knee that feels unstable and the aches and pains of getting older are taking their toll.  Once I'm to my feet I feel I'm surfing as good as ever but paddling ability is getting steadily worse and not as much pop as I used to have getting to my feet.  I always swore I'd stay on a shortboard until age 50 and I'm still determined but its gonna take work.

  • Similar feeling.  Not surfing as much with family obligations and getting older are tempting me to scale up in my quiver.  Already scaled up my fish and the rest may follow.  Holding off as much as I can but as soon as the fun factor disappears I'll have to do the necessary.  Missed a lot of good swells this year and caught a few good ones at the same time.  Hoping for more consistent sess's in 2014 and to be at peace with all around me at the same time. :)

  • Having a toddler and getting into my 40's is leading me to up-volume my boards a bit.  Not as much time these days to hit the gym this year, and I want to keep the fun factor up too.  Thankfully, there are so many cool higher volume boards out there nowadays.  No more potato chips for me, I could never surf them that well anyway... :)

  • No lack of work
    But
    Lack of trips
    Lack of swell
On the last trip I felt out of shape

  • I did not surf very much this year. That was sad. Technically, i've improved, but i need a lot more water time. my confidence is still diminished from a knee injury 2 years ago. that sucks. i guess what i've lost in balls i've made up for in technical improvement, but you kind of need balls for really good waves. i look back at pictures from a few years ago, and it seemed like there were so many more really good days. i guess jersey has had a better run, but i feel like it's been slim pickings and super inconsistent near us. i'm going to work hard to get more water time this year, one way or another.

  • Wow. December has come and gone with maybe 1 sesh. Tried last week but holiday traffic tripled my commute. Almost tragic. A few fun ones this fall and spring... Trimmed back my quiver dramatically this fall. Down to 2 bds + a log.

I'm 40 and getting better at surfing (late bloomer). Trying to follow Dorado's example when it comes to exercise. Doing it daily and eating healthfully. Loving the life I have with my wife and kids. Thankful for work.

Starting off the year with a micro trip to CA. Picking up my first custom from someone I don't know well (getting a Von Sol Flying Manta) but will now have an almost all VS quiver. The trip + board is a positive step and I hope this next year means more water time!

  • Sounds cliche, but once I bought a log this summer I had a lot more fun on days I would have previously deemed unrideable.  So def more water time there.
The sea was angry that day, my friends--like an old man trying to send back soup in a deli.

  • I've got logs and all sorts of boards to ride.  My real enjoyment comes from short boards.  Will probably make myself a mini Simmons or something like the bing dharma in the spring to add to my options.

  • Still moving forward. I'm very determined  :o . Just took a few steps with equipment that have helped me push things some. Different types of quad fins and different setups of the boxes. I was never too big on quads that ride like fishes. I'm a thruster guy since I don't like the tracky feel. Quads with the boxes clustered on the rails ride like fish imho, so no good. So I found that rear boxes placed  at least a bit more centered and fins {50/50 foil} that are more vertical, give me something closer to thruster feel but with more speed and face bite for barrels.
It's no better to be safe than sorry....

  • Boy the crew is getting old lol. Totally agree about the aches and pains putting a damper on things...and cant even imagine the toll sandy took on everyone...

Interesting year for me, literally no surf in first half due to new addition to family. Reluctantly embraced the SUP darkside. Actually have been in the water every week since so getting back in shape slowly.

Surfwise i wouldnt say i am improving from a tech shortboard perspective anymore, and am pretty cool with that. Have been loving exploring diferent boards and waves and pretty stoked on that. Plus got a fun surf related job in 2013 so feeling very lucky.

Heres to more waves in 2014!
    can you here me now...good

  • This sounds like the geriatric ward in the nursing home.  I am 54 and happy to say had a lot of fun.  The spring was solid and when Andrea hit in June I thought we were going to have a great cane year.  Summer was better then last year but lite on the canes.  November was a blast and December was fun.  Wish we had more cane surf, glad we did not get hammered.

While hanging with a surf buddy who is 55 we discussed some of the aches and pains and I said as long as the right parts work, who cares, no Viagra for me!

  • Since surfing is always better than not surfing I'd rate it better. Got a new for me log that's magic.

  • Turned 50 this year and I am going into my 10th year of surfing. Midlife crises seems to be extending past midlife. Something clicked for me on the shortboard this year and I think that it is all down to wave selection. I worked on having more patience and was rewarded with less time behind the section. Still have a lot to work to do on, turns, pumping etc.

Made a couple of mid-lengths this year and have been having fun on those and of course I still dig riding logs.
